We Knew We Wanted an Outer Reef

Our boat is named MARAÍ (which is pronounced Mar-I). Jean is of Irish heritage, and I was born in the UK of Scottish parents. MARAÍ is the Gaelic word for seafarer. Gaelic uses "mar" for sea, similar to the Latin "mare". So MARAÍ loosely translates to "of the sea am I" or seafarer …

She is based in Stuart, Florida, and we plan to cruise all of the East Coast, with summers typically in New England. Jean and I both lived and worked in Boston for years, and we have a summer home on Cape Cod.

But our grand goal is also to get the boat over to the Med for a while, as we love that part of the world, and cruising that part of the world. That part of the plan was important to our decision to build not buy, as we knew we wanted an Outer Reef, but also knew we needed a global electrical system - a passerelle - or some other way to stern board from a fixed dock, and a wastewater treatment plant, which few Outer Reef’s have. So ours was built with the ASEA and Headhunter HMX systems, and an Opacmare transformer, which will serve as a passerelle as well as a diving platform and an easy way to get back aboard the boat after a swim.

Our other big choice was to do the Deluxbridge, of course. That was driven by in part for the desire for a skylounge, which we will use as an office and mini-gym, and by the "country kitchen" style galley and dining area it allows for.

The craziest piece of customization we requested is providing for a Litter Robot for our cat in the closet of the starboard guest cabin, and a cat door by which he can access it. We were told it’s an Outer Reef first, but then someone said you might have done one other, so not sure about that. I know the factory had a few chuckles about it, and also some consternation over getting it to fit, but handled it graciously and with good humor. The cat owners will understand…

She is a crewed boat, and having a comfortable crew area finished to yacht standards is another of the many factors that drew us to Outer Reef.
