Prior to Outer Reef I owned primarily coastal cruisers. But as I made a decision that I would travel to Alaska and then Cape Horn, I wanted something of an expedition yacht. From around 2007 – 2013 I visited many boat shows and met with many boat builders. Each builder I met, I felt a certain misgiving of one form or another. Ocean Alexander and Marlow Yachts, I wasn’t happy with their construction, Nordhavn I really didn’t like its sea worthiness. I know Nordhavn has a remarkable reputation for expedition yachts but when I did a sea trial and asked to shut off the stabilizers, I was very concerned about the roll in what were some pretty stable seas. Other builders I was concerned about “after sale” support which was especially important to me as I knew I’d be travelling to some remote places and I needed to know I had the support of the builder regardless where I was. I had my surveyor with me on many of these trips and I think at the 2008 Fort Lauderdale Boat Show that my surveyor and I met with the folks at Outer Reef. That I think sold me. Perhaps it was my surveyor who liked the construction or Jeff’s New York upbringing which is similar to mine and we just hit it off. In 2013, we signed a contract and neither Jeff or I have ever looked at the contract since. It was really a handshake and I love doing business that way. Long and short, I develop a trust for the individuals behind the name Outer Reef which is far more important that some remarkable marketing material or sales “bull”.
