This past weekend, Outer Reef Yachts sponsored a team participating in “The 2018 Plywood Regatta” an event that honors the craft of boat building and aims to encourage marine education and develop students’ interest in the marine industry. A huge congratulations to the Outer Reef sponsored team, who came in second place!
A maximum of 38 teams of middle school, high school and marine technical school students attempted to build sea-worthy vessels on Saturday, April 14th using simple hand-tools and only the supplied materials of plywood, 3M 5200 fast cure caulk and zip ties. Once the boats were completed, students painted and decorated their boats. On Sunday, April 15th, the participants competed.
All Plywood Regatta proceeds benefit South Florida’s marine industry education programs and the Plywood Regatta Scholarship Fund.
Outer Reef Yachts are built to cruise in all types of seas. That’s why M/Y "CASABLANCA", formerly known as "DOGO’S HIDEOUT", a 700 Outer Reef Motoryacht originally based in the Pacific Northwest, was purchased by her new owner who will cruise to Patagonia to explore these remote and breathtaking waters.
CASABLANCA was sold by Outer Reef Yachts sales representatives Joel Davidson, Matt Maynard and Kevin Blake. The after-sale haul out was done by Seaview Boatyard at Shilshole Marina in Seattle, a group that was instrumental in preparation for this journey. Further, Kevin Blake and Casablanca’s owner selected Seahawk Bottom Paint, with the consultation and customer service largely handled by Seahawk’s Tony Bulpin.
We wish to thank all of those who have greatly contributed to this project, and we wish the new owner of CASABLANCA blue skies and following seas. We look forward to following this exciting journey!

Congratulations to Joel Davidson and Mike Schlichtig at Outer Reef Yachts Fort Lauderdale for the sale of the 860 Deluxbridge (Skylounge) Motoryacht (26.11 meter) “HQ”.
Prior to the sale, M/Y "HQ" cruised the New York State Canal System, starting just north of Albany, New York and ending at Oswego on Lake Ontario. Following this, they traveled to Chicago, then to Florida, and to the Bahamas thereafter. Knowing these were their cruising goals, her original owners worked with the Outer Reef Team during the build process to reduce head room in the skylounge by 1". Outer Reef also made adjustments ensuring all of the electronics on the hard top are completely removable, and designed the mast in a way that when lowered it was no higher than the center of the hard top bringing the maximum height to below 21’. "HQ" is powered by 1600 hp Catepillar C-32’s enabling long passages at hull speeds but allowing maximum speeds of 20 knots.
A heartfelt congratulations to her new owners, a couple from Pennsylvania who will spend winters in Florida, and keep their new yacht in Key Largo. “HQ’s” new name is “INSIGNIA”.
Cruising back from West End. We had a fabulous trip. We were with "SANDANA" who had intended to stay 1 day and ended up staying 4!
To our surprise, a 3rd Outer Reef steamed in. It was the old "DE ONIONS". Obviously, we had to greet them. Meeting the owner, we heard how he bought the boat through Marlow and he received a unexpected call from you pledging support and training.
I just wanted to praise the amount of added value your philosophy brings to Outer Reef. I am certain there is not another company that would offer the same.
The Outer Reef name will surely grow to be penultimate and we are happy to continue to support the movement whole heartedly!

Trevor De Faoite, Outer Reef Yachts European Sales Director, pulls out all of the stops to ensure our clients are ready for the upcoming yachting season. An ample amount of ‘behind the scenes’ preparation in the winter months means that clients will be able to start cruising once the weather breaks.
Life of the Outer Reef Yachts European Director of Sales isn’t always on a yacht, at a boat show or in the office…sometimes he braves -17 degrees Celsius to ensure the client is happy! Chocolates from the oldest chocolate shop in Europe always help too…
I understand ... the short time you had to get our vessel ready (after delivery). It was a "wow’" and everything seemed to go our way. My wife and I probably would have been more relaxed not to have 23 of her relatives on the boat our first night, but everything went well, including the food and the weather. Thank you for letting us do that, as it really made her feel like ours (particularly cleaning her up). The trip to Fort Lauderdale will not be forgotten, and I cannot really explain how comfortable I was at the helm in the parade of boats. She is more controllable and stable than I am used to. We will see what she does at cruise in higher seas but believe all will be well. Thank you to the Outer Reef family. Not done yet, and more on the horizon but if I make it to a very old age, it is a weekend that I will relive again and again.
All the best!

I was reminded, today is my One Year Anniversary of ARGO circling and landing on Cape Horn.
All I can say is thank you. If it wasn't Randy taking my calls at every hour of the night to provide not only technical help but more importantly helping me mentally get through the voyage, or Kristyn trying to get spare parts to me, or if it wasn't for Tracy, I wouldn't have such a prominent memory of my voyage and finally having Jeff commit all the resources of Outer Reef Yachts to help me get through, I don't know if I would have made it.
My sincere thanks to everyone for all the help you guys provided behind the scenes giving me your support and confidence. You guys are the unsung heroes.

It happened again this weekend when I tied up at Wrightsville Beach Marina. In over 3 years and 700+ hours 90% of the time when we pull into a marina, dock hands and other boaters come up to tell me what a classically good looking boat I have. I even received a complement from the senior lock master at the Great Bridge Locks, who over many years has seen tens of thousands of boats and yachts pass his way. It is wonderful to own a boat admired by others which enhances my confidence in my Outer Reef 650.
But what is most comforting is the boat itself, it has handled our travels from the Chesapeake, Key West and the Bahamas delivering us in comfort and security.
Becoming an owner was made so easy because of the people of Outer Reef, starting with Jeff Druek and John Dennison, and Captain Randy Ives continues to support us with answers and suggestions, even our dumb questions. I am a happy Outer Reef owner!
– Paul W., Owner of M/Y Knee Deep
My near lifetime ambition of getting to Cape Horn didn't really strike me until several days after circling and stepping on Cape Horn. I know many other boaters have traveled here but this was MY Mount Everest. The journey was difficult and at times felt insurmountable but knowing that Captain Randy Ives of Outer Reef Yachts was there, not only helping with sending spare parts, walking me through technical issues and providing moral encouragement when I needed it the most, day or night 24/7, made the voyage possible.
My agents (and now friends) in Chile (SASYSS) made life for a non-Spanish speaking person a joy to witness the unique and simply unbelievable natural beauty of Chile, and have firsthand experience of the kindness, generosity, and openness of the Chilean people. This will not go down in the annals of world history but for me, as Rocky Balboa said, "Yo Adrian, I DID IT!!!

I just wanted to send you a quick note to thank you [Joel Davidson] for taking the time to educate my wife and I on the nuances of Outer Reef.
As someone involved in "The Business", I appreciate Outstanding Customer Service. We deal with Boat Salesmen and Boat/Yacht Manufacturers every day at our company. You are, without a doubt, one of the finest salesmen I have met! Even though we advised you early that we were just beginning the search process, and that an Outer Reef Yacht probably exceeds our current maximum budget, you went out of your way to take the time to educate us! I am a huge fan of Outer Reef, but a bigger fan of yours.
As far as I am concerned, the way you represent your Company, you deserve "Best of Show".
Thanks again for taking your valuable show time to treat us so kindly.

With their children and grandchildren in mind, Outer Reef’s robust build and highest caliber of safety standards were a must-have. This photo of their grandchild on their new Outer Reef says it all!
Photographed here is the stunning 860 Deluxbridge Skylounge M/Y "HQ", which cruised the New York State Canal System, starting just north of Albany, New York and ending at Oswego on Lake Ontario. HQ is powered by 1600 hp Catepillar C32’s enabling long passages at hull speeds but allowing maximum speeds of 20 knots.
Outer Reef Yachts European debut of the stunning 630 Motoryacht at the 2017 Cannes Show was a resounding success – we are grateful for those clients, prospects and press who traveled around the world to visit our stand and revel in all of her glory!

We have already experienced our share of storms with the 2017 hurricane season, and M/Y "SANDANA" owners Dan and Sandy speak about the care of their 610 Motoryacht on News 8’s coverage of “Maritime Concerns in New London”, following the Newport Boat Show.
With the Global Debut of the 610 Motoryacht, and display of the award winning 700 Motoryacht series via M/Y "NEVERLAND", attendees from the Northeastern region of U.S. and beyond experienced the allure of two stunning Outer Reefs. Hundreds of groups toured both yachts over the three day show period. The highlight? A gentleman and Outer Reef Yachts prospective owner proposed marriage on the bow of the 610 to his long-time love, Friday evening of the show! Now that’s a compliment indeed!

We were comparing with the Fleming 58, which still does not have a crew quarters and is significantly more expensive. Also, the customization available with Outer Reef Yachts is a significant advantage.
The Nordhavn didn’t really appeal to us - we felt that whilst perfect for crossing oceans, they lacked some of the comforts and relaxing space offered by an Outer Reef.
We are aware that there are other American builders, like Marlow and several others, but they don’t have the same UK presence. Selene was another consideration, but aesthetically they didn’t quite make it for us and I think they are strictly displacement and quite a bit slower than Outer Reef.
Outer Reef ticked pretty much all of the boxes, as I have stated before, because of the combination of features, the boat and the company offer.

Excited new European owners of the 630 M/Y PAKIRI share thoughts on their Outer Reef experience:
Why Outer Reef?
"We were looking for a safe and reliable boat with traditional seagoing looks, modern engineering and technology combined with a very comfortable interior; Outer Reef ticked all the boxes. Other key points for us were the excellent support available in Europe via Outer Reef’s UK office and the degree of customization that can be achieved, making each boat truly unique."
Why the OR 630 Motor Yacht?
"We wanted a boat that we could manage as a couple but that had adequate accommodation for our children and their families when they were cruising with us. The OR630 met these criteria perfectly. The large boat deck, foredeck seating, full height engine room and spacious crew quarters combined with the 3 luxurious cabins set the Outer Reef apart from its similar sized competitors."
What are your plans for 2017/2018 and forwards (recapping for their first summer trip on board this year)?
"Our first season will be spent along the Cote d’Azur from our base in Antibes. Next year we hope to cruise further afield to Corsica and Sardinia."
- Mark and Nicki, Owners of M/Y PAKIRI

Jeff and Mike,
We have been back aboard August Moon (Formerly JAMBO) since last Sunday here in Ft. Lauderdale working daily to prepare for our 3 month cruise north to Maine and back...Liz and I were on a roll until Thursday when Randy was able to come aboard to review and discuss a few last mechanical issues...we discovered that the port engine would not cooperate. No forward or reverse, and now our departure on Saturday was in jeopardy...[Captain] Randy, who cancelled a trip today in order to come back this morning to finish getting us off and running, was incredibly helpful and we are very grateful to Outer Reef for sticking with us through our process. All the best to the whole team!
- M/Y August Moon, Formerly JAMBO
Dear Rick,
I'm glad that Randy could get you up and running and thank you for your kind comments. We understand how important it is for our owners to be able to get use of their boats during prime cruising season and minimize down time. We take great pride in our service department and the philosophy of “client first” that guides all of us at Outer Reef. Please don't hesitate to call if you need any further assistance.
Enjoy your cruise!
Sincere Regards,
Jeff Druek

Everything on an Outer Reef is built for the convenience and safety of the owner-operator, and each Outer Reef Yacht is labeled throughout to assist owners in quickly locating what they are looking for, from light switches to equipment. This creates efficiency and safety for our owners. Not all yacht builders provide this and therefore, this Outer Reef standard practice helps to position our yachts above the rest.

So far our experience with Outer Reef has been exceptional so I am looking forward to the whole experience. I have built a New York office for a major pension fund based on 30 years of learnings where collaboration, respect and the pursuit of excellence are the three main pillars. I have to say that you have done the same at Outer Reef. Randy and Joel are noodling on how to tweak set-up so I can run the ANA LUISA on just one engine without locking the shaft. I asked a few questions and they jumped right on it. Your team definitely is not satisfied with what is but is excited about what could be. Regardless, it is always a pleasure dealing with each member of your team. Well done on getting the culture right!

She is definitely a yacht to be celebrated by her new owners and all who have the opportunity to experience her!
Outer Reef will also present the new 2017 860 Deluxbridge™ Skylounge Motoryacht at the show. High demand for this skylounge model has greatly increased due to the abundant advantages of a temperature controlled upper helm station, and protection from the elements during blue water and long distance cruising. Outer Reef Yachts’ 860 Deluxbridge™ layout features four spacious owner & guest cabins, two crew cabins aft with heads, lounge and galley. Because the upper helm station eliminates the need for main deck helm station, the galley space below is greatly increased, creating an expansive country kitchen for cooking, dining and entertainment. The spacious living accommodations echo the feel of yachts 100’ (30 Meter) and above, and the ample skylounge area provides additional, private and protected dining, entertainment, and office area – all welcomed space options that are valuable during extended journeys. Upgrades include a power system designed for the US or Europe, as well as the Caribbean, and beyond. Also, the state of the art temperature control system is setup to handle extremely hot and cold climates with 14 tons of air conditioning and a Webasto Diesel heating system throughout the boat, convenient for cold climates. For the most advanced security and safety, a Carlisle and Finch Nightfinder 200 spotlight has an integrated FLIR 320 x 240 pixel thermal camera, providing the best of night vision with a 15 million candlepower Xenon spot light capability. Lastly, the engines chosen for the boat provide a wide range of cruising speeds and ranges varying from 8.5 knots to 14.5 knots and up to and incredible 3000 mile range. This exquisite yacht is turnkey and ready for a discerning owner to start their cruising experience immediately.
"BARBARA SUE II", a show-stopping 2015 820 Cockpit Motoryacht, is one of the most bespoke yachts Outer Reef has built and truly reflects the highest quality and sea keeping ability in her class. We all know that the last few years have seen some difficult times in the marine industry. Some builders and dealers have survived and some have gone by the way side, others have been absorbed into larger builder’s portfolios or sold to major corporations overseas.
How this will play out over the next few years is largely a guessing game, some marques will improve with greater investment in technology and better production systems and others may find the pressure to produce returns for investors will have a negative impact on quality and value.
So where does that leave buyers in the future? One thing is for sure, if we are going to sink a significant proportion of our savings into a new yacht (or even a second hand vessel) we better go armed with the best information possible before parting with our money.
There are a myriad of dealers, brokers, builders and middlemen that vie for our attention (and money). Who is working for our best interests and who is telling us simply what we want to hear?
Buying a yacht is a highly emotive proposition for many people. Often we see quite rational and even exemplary business people walk into a boat show and part with significant sums of money purely in the "heat if the moment" only to regret it years later when it comes to resale. Suddenly it becomes clear why that boat show "exceptional" deal was on the table if we signed there and then. Perhaps the wrong specification, the wrong brand, poor quality engineering behind the glamour or a hull that was later known to slam in a head sea. Perhaps over production of certain models that didn't sell well. Whatever the reason if you haven't done your due diligence you could be in for a nasty surprise later.
Most brokers are professionals and if good will be members of a recognised trade association such as the ABYA (Association of Broker and Yacht Agents) and adhering to their code of practice. Choose wisely and you will have an unlimited source of good information. As a buyer it may be well worth engaging a good broker to act on your behalf, even if buying new. You may feel his fee or small commission is a waste of money; but, he or she could potentially save you significant amounts, especially when you need an exit strategy later. By engaging a broker to source and negotiate on your behalf, he will be working solely for you and your interests.
No matter how much you think you know the market, a good broker that sees both ends of the field and has years of historical knowledge of values, day in and day, out has a better inside track to information than you will.
Often, your broker will know which builders spend more time in litigation with customers, which are better at warranty claims and those that almost reject every claim. This is the type of information that comes with experience.
Below is list of questions/considerations you should be able to determine with a little guidance from your chosen broker, to uncover:
- if a particular brand/model is right for you
- if a particular yacht has a good residual value
- if she is a saleable boat several years later
1. Golden rule number one, never buy a boat at a boat show if you feel under pressure to sign there and then. Dealers and builders have targets to reach, stock to move and production to fill and while there are genuine deals to be had at a show, in the majority of cases a dealer or builder will just as well accept your money a few weeks later on a same deal basis. There is never just a "one off" deal to be had. Give yourself time to think and do some quality research but do keep in mind not to procrastinate too long, prices never continually go down, even in tough times eventually prices rise. Labour costs, inflation, shipping prices etc have historically never become cheaper year on year.
2. Check out the second hand prices on used yacht multiple listing websites. This can be very telling. Find your particular brand and model and check prices three or four years older than what you are about to buy. Those are the numbers you should expect when your boat gets to the same age. Forget whatever the sales people tell you, the prices you see from your own research are the real prices, but don't forget advertised prices are not realised prices. Allow for some discount and negotiation to get a true figure.
3. Be wary of unknown brands or ones that have only recently appeared, it will be hard to get any track record of prices and where these boats will be a in a few years time, it's a gamble, it may pay off but it could also be an expensive mistake.
4. Buy the best quality yacht you can afford. If it means going slightly smaller, do so. Whatever budget you have you want as much of that money going into high quality equipment, machinery, joinery, fittings and particularly mouldings and hull structure, not the builders marketing and PR budget. The ocean is a harsh environment for marine gear. Low grade or average quality materials degrade quickly in a salt laden atmosphere. What was a nice shiny cleat or bollard at the boat show now looks like a pitted and corroded low rent piece of equipment. A thinly laminated hull now has deformations and gel cracks. That is going to have a significant impact on what your boat is worth. Would you buy a car with only one coat of cheap paint over a low grade steel body? Amazingly there are boats for sale that you can actually see daylight through the laminations of the hull, do you know which ones?
On the second hand market quality always sells first providing the price is right, there is a reason some boats sell in a shorter time frame and at acceptable prices while others languish sometimes for months on end without even a viewing.
The three Q's should be your guide……"Quality-Quality-Quality"
We can all be lulled into “boat show mode” with amazing hull shapes, huge hull windows that make the interior look stunning, cutting edge design interiors, glass and stainless steel everywhere. Unfortunately, all that means nothing when years later you cannot sell your dream yacht because the quality was not there behind the scenes from the start. Now it all looks dated, worn and generally shabby or broken.
5. Learn what production methods various builders use. There are very few standardized construction methods used in boat building, unlike the automotive industry where there are small tolerances which manufacturers have to work to. In boat building much of the quality comes down to the skill of the individual shipwrights and engineers at the yard. There are yards that build them fast and stack them high and others that can take twice as long to construct but the quality and engineering is vastly superior.
Do you know the difference between a resin infused hull, a cored hull, a polyester or vinylester gelcoat, hand lamination, chop and shut extended or shortened hulls ? These are just few considerations that a good broker will be able to tell you about. A good builder can produce an immaculate resin infused hull, a bad one can send you off on your travels with major defects that may not be apparent until years later. A cored hull can produce a strong and light hull but poorly executed can leak moisture into the core which can be a very expensive repair later. Which builders have the best production methods and which are at best barely acceptable? It is not always the biggest builder or the one that has the largest advertising budget. Some smaller bespoke builders have exceptional quality and have earned a reputation as premium builders.
6. Finally, go with a mindset “what is my exit strategy?”. Before you part with any money think to yourself what is going to be the best investment for reliability, residual value and saleability second hand? It may be very tempting to go for the boat that really stirs your emotions, the glamour and glitz can be very persuasive, but, that soon wears off come resale time, now it is about salvaging what you can from a poorly made decision several years ago. In general the more cutting edge the design and “of the moment” the higher the depreciation.
As a general overview and with our experience of many years selling yachts, here are a few bullet points that should help colour your thinking.
In summary, time and time again, we see that the highest residual values are seen in yachts built in low numbers to high standards, but with years of solid reputation behind them and often direct from the builder. They may not be the most dashing of yachts or even the highest performance but their list of premium equipment and solid engineering along with more conservative styling keeps them current, timeless and value for money.

Our valued client, Mr. Paul Hawran, researched and comparison shopped, and in the end, chose Outer Reef Yachts to accomplish what he set out to do – cruise his 880 Outer Reef Cockpit Motoryacht in remote, untouched areas including Alaska, Patagonia, and around Cape Horn. He chose Outer Reef for many reasons, including our track record of building the best, most robust bluewater yachts available. To truly up the ante, our President and CEO Jeff Druek was inspired by Mr. Hawran’s ambitions and decided to join him and his crew on this magnificent trip around ‘The Horn’. All who are entrenched in blue-water yachting can agree there is no greater testament to a product’s reliability than that of the company’s owner physically participating in a cruise in the most unpredictable and challenging waters in the world. Sailing around the Horn is widely regarded the major challenge in yachting.
As they set out on their journey, we await for news with anticipation. Wishing Paul Hawran and Jeff Druek a safe and memorable journey on the best yacht for this rare and daring cruising challenge – an Outer Reef Yacht!

It's been one heck of a voyage. We passed the equator and of course gave homage to Rex Neptune and asked for a good voyage. I don't think we did enough groveling as he has kicked the crap out of us. Although I didn't look for it, we have had our Victory at Sea moments sustaining 12 foot waves and 50 – 60 knot winds (that’s 57 to 69 mile per hour winds for you land lubbers). Argo has been phenomenal. She has taken everything that has been thrown at her in stride and let me say having a 200,000 pound vessel smack into the seas and come out with her and her passengers in tact has been unbelievable.
Owner of M/Y ARGO, 880 CPMY
Randy at Outer Reef has been a god send for this voyage. He's been available day and night to help us figure stuff out on Argo and actually flew to Costa Rica to help us with a repair we needed to have, thank you Randy.

"Not too many cruising boats with the long-range chops of the Ward Setzer-designed Trident 620 can carve turns at 18 knots. It's a reassuring feeling, to have that speed at your fingertips, and one that can change the whole game. See for yourself.” - Power and Motorayacht Magazine, November 2016 Issue
Outer Reef Yachts is excited to announce the addition of a new sporty sedan model to the Outer Reef Trident Series called the Trident 620 Solara. The new Trident 620 Solara is a welcomed addition to the series initially launched the with the Trident 620 Flybridge model. Cruisers who have come to know Outer Reef Yachts as the expert-builder within the long range motor yacht category now have increased options while choosing the perfect vessel for cruising the European canal system and the U.S. Great Loop, with an air draft of 14’ (4.3 Meters) or long crossings under any sea conditions.
The Trident 620 Solara is built to Ocean, Category A Standards, “Unrestricted Navigation,” and the highest RCD rating, as are all Outer Reef Yachts. She also retains the same specifications and attractive, functional features of the Trident 620 Flybridge; both Trident models were developed by Outer Reef Yachts in cooperation with Setzer Yacht Architects. The Trident 620 Solara offers the signature plumb bow hull design which creates significantly increased interior volume within every Outer Reef Trident, as compared to a traditional clipper bow design. Chic, Euro-style decor elements, superior performance, greater speeds, and enhanced fuel efficiency represent only some of the many features that lend to her appeal.
A few changes differentiate the Trident 620 Solara from her predecessor, including an optional opening sunroof for those who wish to enjoy the wind and sea in their hair. Owners will delight in highly livable interior/exterior spaces, including a galley aft layout with dining counter space and an open-air salon/aft deck for alfresco entertainment. A few steps down is an expansive hydraulic swim platform which serves as a perfect launching pad for water recreation.
As for her interior, and as a production series, the Trident 620 Solara series offers her owners the flexibility of three attractive interior palettes including modern, transitional, or traditional elements, in combination with three interior layout configurations. Both the Flybridge and Solara models offer a three stateroom and three ensuite option, accommodating up to six guests below decks, plus 2 guest/crew accommodations. Upon entering the engine room, she is fully equipped with Cummins engines and pod drives (standard), which allows the Trident 620 Solara to cruise economically, comfortably, and safely at 10 knots, with a fast cruise speed of 20-22 knots and a top speed of 26-28 knots.
The new Trident 620 Solara is competitively priced, and will continue to pave the way for additional Trident Series length and model offerings – including the 620, 720 and the 3000 series (98’ and 106’). With remarkable style, utility, functionality and convenience, paired with Outer Reef’s highest standards in quality of construction and personalized service, the new Trident 620 Solara is a very attractive model option.

Argo is a custom-made Outer Reef built to owner Paul Hawran's specs, and completed a successful shakedown cruise from Victoria, BC to Alaska; (she) now sets her sights on an adventure around Cape Horn and lands beyond. She can go the distance: 3,500 miles at her cruising displacement speed of 10 knots, and has her work cut out for her. But Argo should be up to the task, and whisk her passengers away on adventures of a lifetime. – NW Yachting September 2016 Issue
Outer Reef, founded by Jeff Druek in 2001 offers an everything-is-possible approach to clients who believe in the seaworthiness and safty of the builder’s semi-displacement hull yachts.

Docking a 110-ton boat in a stiff wind blowing with countercurrent into a rickety, water-level bouncing dock missing planks of wood is a good test [of maneuverability]. Argo's maneuverability aided by bow and stern thrusters performed beautifully.

Before building this boat we looked at a lot of different styles. We narrowed it down to four boats that had certain features we loved and wanted, so we took a lot of pictures. We worked with the Outer Reef team and were able to incorporate the features we most wanted into this boat.

Retention of value after three to five years of cruising is most often found when builders have limited or no inventory builds, no extra profit dealer networks, and quality after-sales service. Outer Reef Yachts checks all of these boxes and delivers continual support years after delivery

All three shows produced increased market activity for Outer Reef Yachts, resulting in strengthened prospect and client relationships, and new build contracts for both the Classic and Trident series.
Outer reef yachts completed the 2016 Cannes Yachting Festival with unprecedented success, due to a record setting 50% increase in the number of visitors and global press who came to learn more about the Outer Reef 620 Trident and 24 Meter Classic - both global debuts. Making her worldwide debut at this year’s Cannes Yachting Festival is the new Outer Reef Yachts 24 Meter - a must-visit appointment while at the show. At 78’8” LOA, the 24m shares the same underwater profile and superstructure of the Outer Reef 800 but has been fully customized for a European client.
The hull is a Class A, semi displacement at 81.64 tons, with power coming from twin Caterpillar C12’s delivering a combined output of 1410 bhp and a maximum speed of 14.5 knots with optimal cruising speed of 10 knots.
Whilst the yacht’s primary market is for the explorer, adventurer and long distance cruiser, and with the OR 800 hull being a very capable yacht in a range of sea conditions, this model has also been designed for a client who loves entertaining with an equal emphasis on cordon-bleu style cooking, fine wine and music.
The owners have commissioned state of the art professional galley equipment, together with a $280,000 concert hall-style entertainment system, making this one of the most alternative and exciting “Go Anywhere” offerings to be exhibited at this year’s show.
The configuration of the main deck salon is designed for high level entertainment. The interior is expansive, with 6’8” headroom and likened to similar interiors of a significantly larger super yacht, with a Wenge and Walnut finish, and is contemporary in design and feel. Contained within this, is a u-shaped settee for up to ten guests with full access to the entertainment system and drinks bar area and positioned conveniently next to the galley which, in turn, has direct access to the pilot house.
Trevor De Faoite, Outer Reef’s European sales director commented, “We have delivered a classic yacht with a modern and unique twist, to an exemplary level. And, to my knowledge, this combination is unprecedented in this boat genre anywhere in the world”.
A full WheelHouse™ Technologies and Marine Maintenance System enables the owner operator full operational control. However, there is an option to employ four crew and the vessel offers exceptionally comfortable and congenial surroundings for all, including a full beam Master Stateroom on a flat floor, with his and her’s ensuite facilities, together with two double berth VIP guest state rooms also ensuite. There is capacity for fourteen berths including crew, in total.
Whilst creature comforts and a home-away-from-home feel are top priorities, security is also paramount, and initial sea trials concluded that even when water and fuel tanks were empty, the overall stability remained excellent. Designed with a walkaround fully sheltered main deck leading to a Portugese bridge, in front of the fully weather proofed Pilot House, the yacht offers ample safe areas to operate in, during bouts of inclement weather.
There are fore and aft decks, which complete the main deck layout, clad with teak and will accommodate sun bathing and luxury dining facilities respectively. On this model, a fighting chair on the aft deck has also been fitted.
The Flybridge is based on the exclusive Deluxbridge® full beam width deck which has also been fully teak decked and offers second helm position and seating for ten with full hospitality units including BBQ, near at hand. The boat deck is aft of the fly bridge with enough space for a tender and PWC, both managed by a fully rotational Davit complete with a 12’ arm extension and with lifting power of 800 kilos/1700lbs.
The OR 24 Meter comes with all the trimmings of a fun filled, luxury home without the need to compromise on all weather and sea condition versatility.
This year’s Cannes Yachting Festival will host the exciting World Premiere of the exceptional Trident 620 flybridge sports motoryacht from Outer Reef Yachts.
Marking the first in a series of European built Trident Series boats from Outer Reef, the 61’ 8” / 18.8m long T-620 was developed in cooperation with Setzer Yacht Architects and is based upon a revolutionary and patented Tri-brid™ vacuum infused hull. With sporty good looks and a sharp-suited appearance, the T-620 is bound to attract style-conscious buyers from Europe and beyond and is a perfect solution for those wanting to enjoy day-cruising, long weekend getaways, with a further option for extended, long-range cruising.
A plumb bow design with a forgiving, wave-piercing forefoot that elevates when horsepower is applied from semi-displacement speeds. The rationale behind the Tri-brid™ hull is about empowering owners who like to cruise as fuel-efficiently as possible, but who might still enjoy short and thrilling bursts of speed up to 28 knots on occasion.
Displacing 28.58 tons at half-load and powered by an ultra-efficient, twin 550hp Cummins engine package, the T-620 is built to CE Category A Unlimited Ocean classification and is a true, long-distance ocean-voyager with economical fuel consumption of just 3.9 US gallons/hour at 8 knots giving a safe cruising range of 1500nm.
A walk-around main deck/pilot house leads aft to a shaded, external seating area. Steps lead down to the swim platform which has an ingenious Hi-Low boarding system built-in, designed and constructed exclusively by Outer Reef engineers. This fully automated system has a detachable handrail and is an improvement upon standard passerelles, by enabling safe stern-to boarding across a range of quay-side/dock-side heights. The system also doubles as a submerged ladder for the safe boarding of swimmers or divers. Up above the pilot house/salon there’s a spacious flybridge, with either single or twin helm seat set-up, a table, and plenty of outside seating and space for everyone to socialize. Towards the back there’s a dedicated tender cradle and hydraulic crane for convenient launch and retrieval.
Customers can choose between one of three different interior décor styles that include a choice of different wood veneers and one of six Awlgrip hull colors.
Accessed by guests through the central hall area, the T-620’s en-suite accommodation comprises a full-beam owner’s stateroom, with 6’ 8” standing head-room and a fully flat (not stepped) floor. A forward located VIP suite, provides another highly comfortable and welcome retreat for another 2 people and there is the option of either an additional twin bunk-bed style cabin, or the same space can be requested as an office/study, with a single Pullman berth if required.
Taking account of the fact that some owners may wish to opt for a small crew, the T-620 has the option for an additional one or two crew berths, within the workshop/storage area, in front of the separate engine room.
There are three interior versions including two galley aft layouts, which flow more directly onto the aft deck area and appropriate for owners who entertain regularly or prefer an indoor-outdoor lifestyle. Whereas the galley forward layout follows a more traditional route, feels comfortable and works well for live-a-boards or those who prefer to cruise greater distances at a time.
Carefully considered touches such as offering full-depth drawers in our staterooms offer users the kind of storage space not always available on competitor yachts in this size range. Similarly, high-quality, branded fittings, for example, such as Corian countertops and Grohe galley and head fixtures add that truly luxurious feel throughout.
An exceptionally quiet boat for occupants inside; flexible seals and rubber insulation minimize the risk of vibration, while pipe work and trunking has been isolated on mounts with sound-proof foam to minimize internal noise, such as the sound of water slapping against the hull.

In January 2016, eyachts was appointed the Australasian representatives of Outer Reef® Yachts’ collection of long range motoryachts, including the Classic and Trident™ Series, ranging from 55’ – 115’ in length. The company operates two sales centers in Northern Sydney, Australia and Westhaven, New Zealand, and several service locations in the area.
Outer Reef® will display a three stateroom 630 Long Range Motoryacht, “ICEBERG”, located at the eyachts pavilion on Dock D. This impressionable Outer Reef® boasts a unique and contemporary interior design by the prestigious Ken Freivokh Design, known in the yachting industry as a multi-disciplinary team renowned for creating unique “out of the box” design solutions. The yacht’s customized interior is an exquisite reflection of the owner’s authentic tastes, and is an optional interior presentation enjoyed by those who are inclined toward a contemporary look and feel.
Another noteworthy feature offered by the 630 Long Range Motoryacht is a full beam flybridge deck, a standard offering providing excellent visibility and the maximum possible space for piloting, relaxing, and entertaining while enjoying the breathtaking Australasian cruising grounds. The standard hardtop protects the owner/operator while at the helm or enjoying refreshments at the dinette area. Built-in refrigeration, ice maker and wet bar allows the owner to conveniently host guests while enjoying the great outdoors.

Outer Reef Yachts’ proud ownership group, in their ‘pursuit of happiness’ gathered early April for an Owner’s Group 2016 Rendezvous in Highbourne Cay, approximately 35 miles east of New Providence and extending south-eastwardly for nearly 100 miles is the Exuma Cays, one of the crown jewels of The Bahamas. The pristine beauty, outstanding anchorages, and unspoiled marine environment of the Exumas are world-renowned and served as the backdrop of their group activities, including personalized Outer Reef Yacht tours, water sports, beach bonfires, experiencing the local culinary delights, and getting out on the turquoise waters to simply relax and enjoy boating and new friends.
Each year, Outer Reef Yachts is excited and honored to sponsor an enthusiastic, young team in the Plywood Regatta, a two-day boat building event that introduces young marine enthusiasts and the community to the craft of boat building using limited, rationed supplies and old fashioned ingenuity. All Plywood Regatta proceeds benefit marine industry educational programs and the Plywood Regatta scholarship fund. The aim of these programs is to encourage marine education and develop these students’ interest in the marine industry.

We can all agree Palm Beach is a magical place that consistently presents an allure of sophistication, elegance, tradition and power – the very essence of the Outer Reef brand and the two Outer Reef yachts on display at the show. Both the 860 Deluxbridge and the 70 Motoryacht were available for touring and of course, leaving lasting impressions.
If you would like more information on these or other yachts within the Outer Reef collection, contact the Outer Reef team today.
Outer Reef Yachts’ displayed three yachts at the Yachts Miami Beach, Collins Avenue show February 11th-15th, 2016. Our Outer Reef 860 Deluxbridge, 580 Motoryacht and 550 Trident created a lasting impression for all who visited. Our 860 Deluxbridge and 550 Trident were globally debuted, and visited by passionate boaters from all over the globe. Each day, clients, prospects, vendors and friends enjoyed touring each yacht while cocktailing and listening to the enchanting Amy Baker perform her classic jazz and blues styled performance.
One of the highlights of our Yachts Miami Beach show celebrations was the Christening party of the new 580 Motoryacht, Ariel. This yacht was built by owners who are so passionate about being on the water, they live aboard full time – a strong testament to their choice of building an Outer Reef. Celebrating Saturday evening, surrounded by friends and family toasting to this momentous occasion, is a memory we will cherish.
Incredible Outer Reef Yachts, palm trees, excellent entertainment and friends…all paired with the beautiful backdrop of the city of Miami. Who could ask for more!
Outer Reef Yachts will join the yachting community for the 31st Annual Palm Beach International Boat Show, March 17 - 20th, 2016. Join Outer Reef Yachts, positioned on Ramp 2, as we will be presenting distinguished yachts from our current Classic Collection, including the most recently American debuted Outer Reef 860 Deluxbridge. The 860 Deluxbridge will be joined by a 700 Motoryacht.
Award-winning long-range motor yacht builder Outer Reef® Yachts is proud to announce the highly anticipated 550 Trident long range sport motoryacht will make its world debut at the 2016 Yachts Miami Beach International Boat Show, February 11th – 15th. The Trident™ Series was developed in cooperation with Setzer Yacht Architects, and embodies a unique synthesis of stylistic innovation, technology and functionality, while applying unique seakeeping attributes revolutionized by the Outer Reef brand. The attractive plumb bow hull design, chic styling elements, and new length options are introduced with the 550 Outer Reef® Trident™ Series, and will continue throughout larger models, up to 106’. The series offers superior performance, increased cruising and top speeds with enhanced fuel efficiency – only some of the many features that lend to her appeal.
Jeff Druek, President and CEO of Outer Reef® Yachts stated, “At the start of our journey, we anticipated the Trident™ 550 would be a spectacular yacht, especially in terms of performance and efficiency. No stone was left unturned with the Trident™ Series– from the latest technology to impeccable use of space, everything on a long range cruiser’s wish list is at his or her fingertips. The Outer Reef® Trident™, during extensive sea trials in true blue water seas, has surpassed all expectations – and we are excited for clients to experience this new yacht at the Yachts Miami Show. There is no doubt this new Trident™ 550 sets the tone for future expansion of the line and the Outer Reef® Yachts collection.”
Outer Reef® Yachts will also launch the new 860 Deluxbridge™ Motoryacht at the show. High demand for this skylounge model has greatly increased due to the abundant advantages of a temperature controlled upper helm station, and protection from the elements during blue water and long distance cruising. Outer Reef® Yachts’ 860 Deluxbridge™ layout features 4 spacious owner & guest cabins, 2 crew cabins aft with heads, lounge and galley. Because the upper helm station eliminates the need for main deck helm station, the galley space below is greatly increased, creating an expansive country kitchen for cooking, dining and entertainment. The spacious living accommodations echo the feel of yachts 100 feet plus, and the ample skylounge area provides additional, private and protected dining, entertainment, and office area – all welcomed space options that are valuable during extended journeys. Upgrades include 1140hp CAT C-18's, 55hp hydraulic bow and stern thrusters, Trac Zero Speed stabilizers, twin 38KW Northern Lights generators, and a very extensive electronics & AV system. As with every Outer Reef® Yacht within the collection, the Outer Reef® 860 Deluxbridge™ defines new standards with her cutting-edge technology, robust build, and contemporary appeal.
Outer Reef Yachts, the global leader in design, construction, and sale of long range motoryachts, further strengthens the company’s presence in the Australasia region by signing a new representation agreement with eyachts, the powerboat division of the Windcraft Group, for the exclusive sales representation of Outer Reef Yachts. Eyachts has established itself in this marketplace as an unrivalled new and pre-owned yacht and service provider within the powerboat market. For over 17 years, Peter Hrones, Director of the Windcraft Group and eyachts, has developed and expanded the business to become a multi-service yachting resource. The company operates two sales centers in Northern Sydney, Australia and Westhaven, New Zealand, and several service locations in the area.
This new agreement with Outer Reef Yachts, as well as eyachts securing production slots for a number of Outer Reef Tridents, is part of Outer Reef Yachts continued expansion strategy in the Australasia region. This region is an area with considerable growth potential and significant demand for robustly built, blue-water long-range motoryachts, well represented by both the Outer Reef Classic Series and Trident Series. Through this new representation agreement, Outer Reef Yachts is further strengthening its global reach, which currently includes ten customer sales center locations, ensuring that Outer Reef customers and prospective customers receive personalized sales and service representation around the globe.
Peter Hrones, Managing Director of eyachts stated, "Our team and I are extremely excited about working in partnership with Outer Reef Yachts. Currently we have hundreds of Windcraft Yacht owners that have been contemplating their next boat and considering a long distance motor yacht. Many have confirmed an Outer Reef Classic Series boat would be perfect for their next liveaboard cruising boat. With the addition of Outer Reef to our family of brands, we are now able to offer them a top of the line long range cruiser. Our owners prefer to stay within the eyachts/Windcraft Group family, due to the exceptional after-sales service they have come to enjoy over the years. We are also certain the new Outer Reef Yachts Trident Series will be a highly attractive high performance and economical long distance cruiser of the future".
Jeff Druek, President and CEO of Outer Reef Yachts stated, “We are very excited to welcome eyachts/Windcraft Group as our new sales representatives for Australia and New Zealand. Peter and his team have extensive experience within the yachting industry, and will be the perfect representatives to help deliver world-class service to Outer Reef customers in this region. We are grateful for the opportunity to build upon their expertise in our continued international development efforts, and to work with them to deliver our high quality, safe and efficient collection of Outer Reef Yachts to the passionate Australian and New Zealand yachting communities.”
The best gift Outer Reef Yachts received this holiday season is the gift of giving back.
We raised money and bought gifts for homeless children younger than 1, through 17 years of age - their joy and appreciation will warm our hearts for years to come. We are so grateful for the opportunity to meet them and their families, and thank the wonderful staff for helping facilitate this for us.
Success is defined in many ways, and at Outer Reef Yachts, it all comes down to customer relationships, satisfaction and happiness. Outer Reef's 2015 Fort Lauderdale Boat Show was in a word, Stellar. With our stand filled activity, from client and prospective customer visits and tours, Outer Reef Yachts going under contract, the debuts of the new 580 Motoryacht and 820 Cockpit Motoryacht, a Christening celebration to welcome the new and happy 82' Cockpit Motoryacht owners to the Outer Reef Yachts family, and nightly customer appreciation cocktail events, we couldn't have asked for more ways to enjoy cruisers who proudly call themselves fans of Outer Reef Yachts. Each day the Outer Reef Yachts on display made countless impressions with their robust build and appeal. Each night brought events that filled the air with laughter and the enchanting voice of Amy Baker and her loungy 40's and 50's ballads. Suffice it to say, Outer Reef's success at the 2015 Fort Lauderdale Boat Show left crowds wanting more... just the way it is supposed to be.
Award-winning long-range motor yacht builder Outer Reef Yachts is proud to announce the new 580 Classic Long Range Motor Yacht will make its world debut at the 2015 Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, November 5-9. Built to unlimited Ocean Category A Standards, this high quality pilothouse yacht provides great fuel economy, with her 1000 gallon standard fuel capacity at hull speeds. As the smallest Outer Reef in the Classic collection, the new 580 expands the size range offering of the builder’s Classic Motor Yacht series, now ranging from 58 to 115 feet.
“The owners of the new 580 Classic Long Range Motor Yacht, transitioning from sailing to powerboating, required a builder who would listen to their needs, and translate these needs into a customized yacht that suits their lifestyle. After their extensive research, they felt most comfortable building with Outer Reef, knowing we strive meet each customized build with precision, while protecting the value of their investment through dedication to the highest quality,” said Jeff Druek, president and CEO of Outer Reef Yachts. “We are truly excited about introducing this new yacht, which sets the tone for future expansion of the Outer Reef Yachts collection.”
An exciting feature of the new 580 Classic yacht is her 17’2 beam overall, ensuring specious accommodation including a king berth master amidships, queen VIP cabin forward, and port guest cabin with two berths. Other conveniences include a full size washer and dryer in the forward accommodation space, stand up engine room with both fore and aft access, and a large lazerette with a transom door. The open main deck layout provides unlimited sightlines from her pilothouse, an adjoining galley with full size appliances with large pantries, and a comfortable salon with covered aft deck for alfresco dining. In addition, the Outer Reef 58’ Long Range Motor Yacht is equipped with bow and stern thrusters, oversized stabilizers, upgraded inverter system for systems operation at anchor, a hardtop over her upper helm and seating area, and a boat deck with a hydraulic davit to launch her 13 foot tender to both the port side or the stern of the vessel.
Outer Reef Yachts also will launch the latest 820 Cockpit Motoryacht, with a slightly altered accommodation layout to her predecessor - the 800 Long Range Motoryacht - at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show. In keeping with the core philosophy of the all Outer Reef builds, the 820 Cockpit Motoryacht offers the utmost in cruising pleasure and comfort, with highly livable exterior spaces and well-thought-out furnishings. Updated styling offered in the new 820 Cockpit Motoryacht includes a reconfigured crew area and staircase from salon to crew, which creates an increase in space, efficiency, and convenience. As with all Outer Reef’s models, the exercise of consistently reviewing and refreshing the design and engineering is the reason behind the company’s leadership position within the industry.
In addition to these two new yacht debuts at the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show, the Outer Reef Yachts display, located at the B/C Dock, will also showcase the most recent build of the Outer Reef 650 Long Range Motoryacht, along with a 700 Long Range Motoryacht.
Outer Reef Yachts successfully attended five boat shows in the month of September, globally representing their exclusive long range motoryacht collection, at the 2015 Cannes Yachting Festival, Newport Beach California Lido Boat Show, Seattle Boat Show, Newport Rhode Island International Boat Show, and Bay Bridge Trawler Fest. All five shows produced increased market activity for Outer Reef Yachts, resulting in strengthened prospect and client relationships, and new build contracts for both the Classic and Trident series. The highlight of the season was a festive new yacht christening celebration at the Lido Boat Show – an Outer Reef hosted event welcoming the new owners of a 2015 Outer Reef 880 Cockpit Motoryacht, to the close-nit Outer Reef ownership family.
Outer Reef Yachts has announced that Kristyn Rubertus has joined the Outer Reef Yachts Service Department as Service Administrator, based at the company’s headquarters in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Working with senior management, Rubertus will assist with daily project management of yacht commissioning, service, and warranty while implementing growth strategies within the department.
Rubertus gained valuable experience while formerly employed with Sunseeker Florida as Service Administrator, helping coordinate warranty and after-sale parts orders for all Sunseeker Florida yachts. This position included daily communications with the factory based in Poole, England, while project managing and coordinating with their team of yacht subcontractors in South Florida. Rubertus joins Outer Reef Yachts to further her career growth, as well as the company’s continued dedication to ensuring Outer Reef yacht owners are the first priority throughout all service endeavors. Over the years, Outer Reef Yachts has established itself as a service powerhouse within the industry, going above and beyond any of the competition. At Outer Reef, all employees are held to the highest standards based on the premise that outstanding service, in combination with yacht construction of the highest quality, are the ingredients for long-lasting client relationships. Jeff Druek, President and CEO of Outer Reef Yachts stated, “From all of my previous business experiences, I’m convinced the true value of a company lies within the client’s experience after the sale, and the most lasting impressions are made with customers who feel their best interests will be looked after once their new yacht has left the dock. Our goal is to maintain the highest level of service satisfaction, which is why Outer Reef will continue to invest in the growth of our company, products, and team while welcoming the contribution of experienced professionals like Kristyn Rubertus.”
Company growth has been inevitable with the addition of new product lines this past year, including the launch of the Outer Reef Trident series, a series that focuses on the design and construction of long range motoryachts with a unique synthesis of contemporary stylistic innovation, technology and functionality. With continued expansion of the Outer Reef product line in the near future, clients can look forward to a well-rounded cruising and ownership experience, consistently guaranteed by the dedicated and growing team that proudly represents the Outer Reef Yachts company and brand.

Outer Reef Yachts successfully attended three boat shows in the month of January, globally representing their Long Range Motoryacht Classic Series and new Trident Series, at the 2015 Düsseldorf Boat Show, Seattle Boat Show, and the Riviera Beach, Florida Trawler Fest. All three shows produced increased market activity for Outer Reef Yachts, resulting in three new build contracts signed at the Düsseldorf show alone. The contracts include new builds for both the Outer Reef Classic Series, as well as the new Outer Reef Trident Series.
Jeff Druek, President and CEO of Outer Reef Yachts, stated, “International boat show attendance is imperative to Outer Reef Yachts, as it allows our team of professionals to connect with each of our localized markets’ customers, prospects and media partners, while collectively expanding our accessibility and knowledge. At boot, the Düsseldorf International Boat Show, we experienced a high volume of interest that translated into commitments from the northern and central European marketplace. We believe this is due to the re-emerging economy and a rekindled desire to spend leisure time yachting, hence the need to own a robust, proven, and efficient long range cruiser. This desire translates to all geographic areas of our marketplace, as we were also fortunate to experience heightened enthusiasm from the other January 2015 show attendees visiting Outer Reef Yachts.”
Originally a concept born from a client boat show discussion, Outer Reef’s new Trident Series is a recent concept-turned-reality, with a flurry of new build activity at the state of the art shipyard located in Split, Croatia. Due to owners’ and prospects’ needs for a trustworthy, seafaring vessel offered in 55’, 65’ and 75’, and 98’ lengths, the first Trident will be available for a personalized tour at the upcoming 2015 Cannes Yachting Festival and Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show. Prior to this, the first Trident 550 will be available for sea trials at our shipyard in Split this summer.
With a passion for safe, efficient, smart and enjoyable yachting as the common thread, the world of Outer Reef owners and perspective owners continues to experience healthy growth at boat shows and beyond. Outer Reef Yachts will continue to directly manage the Outer Reef brokerage arm of their business.

Part of this growth is due to the successful launch of our new Outer Reef Trident Series. Both the Outer Reef Classic Series, as well as the new Trident Series, are perfect solutions for yachtsmen looking to cruise some of the most diverse and scenic cruising grounds in the world, while benefitting from Outer Reef’s bluewater cruising efficiency, quality, and safety.”

Outer Reef Yachts is extremely grateful for your participation at our 2014 Press and VIP Guest Conference, and recognize our great success, at the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show and beyond, can be attributed to your support, feedback and participation. We look forward to sharing more exciting Outer Reef news and announcements in the weeks and months to come!
Outer Reef Yachts is pleased to announce the 860 Cockpit Motoryacht was named the Best 70’+ Passagemaker at the 2014 AIM Marine Group Editor’s Choice Awards gala, held on October 31st at the Fort Lauderdale Boat show. The winning yachts represent the world’s finest builds in the industry, based on extraordinary naval architecture, design, interiors, and engineering.
Finalists were selected by the distinguished team of AIM Marine editors, after intense review of the vessels, boat testing, end user discussions, overall performance, and aesthetic appeal. The 860 concept and design was created by the Outer Reef Yachts design team who designed the yacht based on feedback from clients who desired the flexibility to go anywhere, anytime, while avoiding delays due to inclement weather or less than desirable conditions.
Jeff Druek, President and CEO of Outer Reef Yachts stated, “We are extremely grateful and honored to earn this prestigious award from the AIM Marine Group’s Editor’s Choice Awards. This particular model has become an important and popular offering for Outer Reef, as our clients enjoy activities such as fishing, diving and simply enjoying the sunset from the expansive cockpit area. This convenience, in combination with her state of the art technology, fuel efficiency, and robust construction creates the perfect combination of form and function. We are pleased others have recognized that this yacht raises the bar for others in her class”.
The 860 Cockpit Motoryacht, along with the rest of the Outer Reef Classic Series, boasts stout construction, spacious social areas, ample storage, a contemporary interior palette, and outstanding performance. Outer Reef Yachts accommodates each owner by customizing the interior to fit the owner’s specifications – this flexibility is key when looking to cater to an owner’s lifestyle or enhance the family yachting experience.
Outer Reef Yachts, the world renowned long range cruising yacht manufacturer, pioneers another first in the industry by taking QR Code technology to the next level, through the new Outer Reef Yachts’ Quik Code System™. QR Codes are computer generated images used as a shortcut to connect directly with online resources, without having to type a URL into an internet browser. By assigning an individualized QR code to each piece of equipment throughout the yacht, the code will direct a user to the desired page and topic in Outer Reef’s digital Owner’s Instructional and Maintenance Manual. An owner operator, captain, or maintenance technician can quickly locate the specific information needed through the convenience of a hand held mobile device.
The owner, captain or technician, equipped with a smart phone or tablet will easily point and click to be directed to the equipment’s specific manual page, section, and topic, removing the need to search through a hard copy or scroll through the online service manual. In short, this process provides instant access to the required information for all equipment throughout the yacht, from the Pilot House DC/AC Panels to the engine room’s hydraulic and fuel systems, etc.
The Quik Code System™ is not the first ‘convenience technology’ pioneered by Outer Reef Yachts. Outer Reef Yachts was the first long range motoryacht manufacturer to provide each owner with an iPad version of the Owner’s Instructional and Maintenance Manual for their yachts. Owners, captains and maintenance technicians of all technical backgrounds will enjoy and appreciate the convenience of accessing all the information needed to operate, manage, and maintain the yacht via an iPad. The information housed on the iPad is provided by Outer Reef Yachts to Wheelhouse Technologies (www.wheelhousetech.com), a company that specializes in creating tailored owners manuals and proprietary maintenance programs. Wheelhouse Technologies also maintains the information, by continuously updating the database as needed, to ensure the user is referring to the most current manufacturer information at all times.
Jeff Druek, President and CEO of Outer Reef Yachts, stated, “Outer Reef continues to value and promote a personalized customer service experience through our global network of sales and service experts. To compliment this, from an owner-operator standpoint, we are also aware of the importance of staying current with advances in technology that help run and maintain the vessel as efficiently as possible, whether the owner is addressing annual maintenance or preparing for a long-range cruise. A streamlined information-gathering experience, with the click of a button, will help the owner better maintain and manage various equipment and electronics. By employing time-saving, cutting-edge technology, we make it easier for owners to spend more time cruising and enjoying their Outer Reef.”
All Outer Reef Yachts, globally, will display the new Quik Code System™. The first Outer Reef Yacht to showcase the new QR code technology to the general public will be on display at the upcoming 55th Fort Lauderdale Boat Show, October 30 through November 3rd, 2014 at Outer Reef’s location, B/C Dock 9,10,12.
This weekend, Outer Reef Yachts attended the 2nd Annual Crab Feast fundraiser at the Elks Lodge in Severna Park MD, with 100% of the profit benefiting Truckin 4 Troops. The Crab Feast featured raffles, door prizes, a silent auction and more!
When Outer Reef asked me in June to do the Newport Show I immediately said yes. Not because I like boat shows (which I don't) but because I like Outer Reef. My agreement to do this show was a direct result of their incredible responsiveness and cooperation since the beginning of this endeavor (purchase of a 63’ Long Range Motoryacht) and to this very day.
- Les Shapiro, Owner of "Guided Discovery"
With their finger on the pulse internationally, Outer Reef Yachts attended three boat shows last week, representing their Long Range Motoryacht Classic Series at the Cannes Yachting Festival, Newport International Boat Show, and the Seattle Boats A Float Show, from September 9th through September 14th. The shows also provided an opportunity for the Outer Reef Team to proudly represent and provide information on the new Trident Series, recently launched in July 2014.
Jeff Druek, President and CEO of Outer Reef Yachts, stated, “With a growing Long Range Cruiser product line including the most recent launch of the Outer Reef Trident Series, it is imperative for our management team to continue to engage with our prospects and customers at a localized level, carefully listen to the experiences and feedback shared, and intelligently apply this information to the design and style of our vessels. Our yachts are built to express unique, geographic-enhanced features that meet the needs of yachtsmen spanning the globe. Different cruising grounds and conditions require a keen attention to detail, with differences in such things as crew quarters, storage and helm stations; discussing these items with the boat show visitors helps us roll up our sleeves and create a better cruising experience. This special attention sets us apart from other manufacturers, and we greatly appreciate our current and future clients’ insight, which can be applied to future, cutting-edge projects”.
Born from previous boat show discussions, Outer Reef’s new Trident Series emerged from clients’ needs for a trustworthy, seafaring vessel offered in 55’, 65’ and 75’ lengths. To meet this request, the builder selected Setzer Yacht Architects, designers of Outer Reef’s 105-115 foot flagship Explorer series, to develop the new line of vessels. “We share a passion with Outer Reef for oceangoing, blue-water ready hulls,” said Setzer. “Our past work on large, go-anywhere type expedition and explorer vessels gives us a wealth of learning we can draw upon for the Trident project.” The collaboration is thus a natural segue for Outer Reef, as its core mission includes building vessels that avoid compromising robustness in the name of aesthetics or speed.
The three mentioned boat shows brought visitors from all over the globe, and presented Outer Reef the opportunity to showcase several yachts including the 63’ LRMY, 70’ LRMY and the latest Trident series information. Visitation to Outer Reef Yachts’ show locations experienced significant growth – a good indication the yachting public is interested in long range cruisers of the highest quality, paired with stellar customer service and competitive pricing, which Outer Reef Yachts is known for.
With a passion for safe, efficient, smart and enjoyable yachting as the common thread, the world of Outer Reef owners and perspective owners continues to experience healthy growth at boat shows and beyond. As this trend continues, the company strives to preserve a very intimate, personalized experience for the family of Outer Reef Yacht owners and those able to enjoy the Outer Reef experience, wherever their journey takes them.
Outer Reef Yachts, the well-known builder of high quality long range motor yachts, is proud to announce the launch of an exciting new model line, the Outer Reef Trident Series. This new series boasts a notable departure from Outer Reef’s classic product lines that have come before her. Developed in cooperation with Setzer Yacht Architects, the Outer Reef Trident Series embodies a unique synthesis of stylistic innovation, technology and functionality. The attractive plumb bow hull design, chic styling elements, and new length options are introduced with the 550 Outer Reef Trident Series. The series also offers superior performance, heightened speeds, and enhanced fuel efficiency, representing only some of the many features that lend to her appeal.
In addition, the Outer Reef Trident Series will maintain the valued benefits of safety and efficiency commensurate with the Outer Reef brand; the Trident Series will be built to CE Category A-Unlimited Ocean. With these valued attributes, and born from significant market demand, twelve Outer Reef Tridents have already been ordered prior to her official launch. The first 550 will make her world debut at the 2015 Cannes Boat Show in France. Jeff Druek, President and CEO of Outer Reef Yachts stated, “At Outer Reef, our client’s feedback, as well as extensive market research, is paramount to our success. Once it became apparent that a yacht under 17 meters in length would increase our reach within growing global demand, the new Outer Reef Trident Series emerged as the undeniable solution. I’m confident the series is a ‘must have’ for cruisers who prefer to enjoy the flexibility and freedom of the Owner-Operator experience, for day trips and long weekend getaways, while maintaining the option of long range cruising for extended periods of time.”
The Outer Reef Trident Series, as a production series, will uphold Outer Reef Yacht’s high quality manufacturing and un-matched customer service, while yielding two things: an attractive price point well below the competition, and an enhanced specification. Differing from the company’s previous semi-custom product lines, the series offers her owners the flexibility of three attractive interior palettes including modern, transitional, or traditional elements, in combination with three interior layout configurations.
The innovative features of the new series continues to impress throughout the engine room. She is fully equipped with Cummins engines and pod drives (standard), which allows the 550 Outer Reef Trident Series to cruise economically, comfortably and safely at 10 knots, with a fast cruise speed of 18-20 knots and attain a top speed of 28 knots.
Cruising speed and efficiency is greatly increased by a newly designed hull, that performs like a planing hull at a higher speed, yet is very stable and seaworthy at slower speeds with her patented “Tri-brid™ ” semi-displacement hull design. Even with resin infused technology, which guarantees perfect resin to composite ratios for weight savings, the 550 Outer Reef Trident Series still weighs in at 58,500 lbs. at half load. This is a robust displacement for a vessel of this size, hinting of her stout construction – a quality for which Outer Reef Yachts is world-renowned.
The new Outer Reef Trident™ Series is currently available in three offerings – the 550, 680, 980 and 106 models. With remarkable style, utility, functionality and convenience, paired with Outer Reef’s highest standards in quality of construction and personalized service, the new Outer Reef Trident™ Series is destined to live up to the mythological symbolism for which she is named – the trusted, treasured object resting in the great hand of Poseidon, God of the Sea.
Outer Reef Yachts, a world leader in the design, construction and sale of high quality long range motor yachts, is proud to announce the company will have a premier sales center located in Cartagena de Indias - the Colombian seaport area, and heart of Caribbean commerce and tourism.
Outer Reef’s Latin American sales team, located in this new retail center, will be led by the area’s representative and active community leader, Jaime Borda. The Cartagena area was particularly attractive to Outer Reef as it is a growing center for business, tourism, and the hub of the Caribbean yachting community, as it is close to turnkey service facilities and overall commerce.
Jeff Druek, Outer Reef Yacht’s President and CEO, stated, “We chose to continue our company’s growth in Cartagena, given that in the last five years, the city has become a prominent location in the Latin American market, as a burgeoning commercial and residential real estate center for Central and South Americans. Many of our clients in Latin America see Cartagena as the heart of yachting activity, with magnificent views reachable within minutes of the inlet.”
According to Data Monitor Financial 2014, the Colombian wealth market’s value is forecasted to grow robustly during 2011-2015, second only to the Brazilian market, out of the countries studied in the database. The number of affluent individuals is forecasted to grow at a compounded rate of 10.6% over the same period.
In a statement from Jaime Borda, “Cartagena offers both a strong home base marina for Latin America’s elite yachting community and is a convenient location, offering a myriad of services to a diversified group of yacht owners, including the strong and growing demographic of clients from surrounding Latin American countries including Panama, Brazil, Mexico and Argentina.”
Most recently, the Outer Reef Cartagena and South Florida sales team successfully participated in the 1st annual Panama Boat Show, which took place June 20th – 22nd.
The winners of the 2014 Motor Boat Awards were announced last night at a Gala Dinner and Award Ceremony hosted by IPC Marine Media at The Landmark Hotel in London. A gathered audience of over 250 international guests saw Motor Boat Awards presented to winning boats in nine categories ranging from 16 foot Starterboats to super-luxury Custom Yachts. A further seven boats were Highly Commended by the judges.
The Award Ceremony was co-hosted by the editors of Motor Boat & Yachting and Motor Boats Monthly, Hugo Andreae and Rob Peake. These two IPC Marine Media titles launched the Awards in 2007 and their experienced journalists make up the judging panel. A total of 55 boats were selected as finalists for the 2014 awards and the 9 winners came from Austria, England, Italy and the US.
The Outer Reef 700 took the honors in the ‘Trawler Yachts and Aft Cabin’ category, with Motor Boat & Yachting editor Hugo Andreae saying: “it does everything a world class trawler yacht should and matches it with a level of build quality and customization that we would never have believed possible at this price.”
Among other winners were the Austrian-built Frauscher 1017 GT in the ‘Performance Boat’ category, and Ferretti for the Ferretti 960 in the ‘Custom Yacht’ category.
Simon Owen, Publishing Director of IPC Marine Media, congratulated the winners, summarizing, ‘The wide range of nationalities we have welcomed onto the stage tonight perfectly reflects the growing international reach and appeal of Motor Boat & Yachting and Motorboats Monthly. Despite the harshness of recent years, it’s enormously gratifying to be in the company of winners and finalists who have once more impressed our judges with their mixture of high quality construction, design innovation and outstanding on-water performance.’
As 2013 draws to a close, many of us reflect on the events and milestones of the past year and look forward towards the future.
For many of us, we have been fortunate to have had a positive year in business. Most notably though, it is a time to reflect on what is most important in our lives - our family and friends.
Many milestones have been reached this year, from wedding anniversaries, to the marriages of our children and new family members coming into our lives, whether it be children or grandchildren.
Having been on boats all my life, some of the fondest memories I have were when I was boating with my family. It gives me great pleasure to be instrumental in providing for our clients the platform in which to share and create new memories with their families and friends.
Boating is about passion and the love of the water. To me building boats is no less passionate. What provides the fuel for my passion of this business is the interaction and excitement of every one of our clients, from the first day of their design session to many years after as we gather to share our camaraderie at many a social event. To all of you, thank you for that fuel that keeps the fire burning!
To all our friends, clients, and associates and all their families, I wish you all a very healthy and happy Holiday season and a Happy New Year!

New Outer Reef 700 is loaded on a ship and is on it's way to it's home port in Fort Lauderdale. The yacht is scheduled to arrive during the winter holiday week and will be available for preview at the Miami Yacht & Brokerage Show February 13 - 17 and the Palm Beach International Boat Show March 20 - 23, 2014.
Thanks to everyone’s generous donations, Outer Reef Yachts was able to raise almost $40,000.00 at our annual Owner’s Rendezvous in South Carolina in June, 2013. Working with an organization called Truckin 4 Troops, we were able to contribute the funds to help build Staff Sgt. Travis Mills a custom Ford F-250 Super Duty pickup truck. Scott Mallary, Founder and President, started this foundation in January 2011, to support our troops, Wounded Warriors, veterans and military families.
Staff Sgt. Travis Mills stepped on an IED in Afghanistan, becoming the 4th quadruple amputee out of five who have survived this type of injury from the war.

This month’s update comes on the heels of a very successful Outer Reef Owners Rendezvous and charity event held in beautiful Charleston Harbor, South Carolina the first week of June, 2013. The weather for move-in day was a bit uninviting and the long range forecast was not too rosy. Although we all plan and hope for good weather, being boaters, we all have learned to go with the flow when it comes to weather patterns.
The welcome dinner on Thursday evening was a bit windy, wet and raw, but warm spirits of all our owners as well as some liquid spirits and good food seemed to temper Mother Nature.
Saturday evening’s dinner was held aboard the USS Yorktown, a WWII aircraft carrier. The USS Yorktown was a very inspirational setting for the evening’s fund raiser for the Wounded Warrior Project, a charity that is very close to my heart. Our goal this year was to raise enough money to purchase two Action TrackChairs, which are all-terrain wheelchairs, and to donate them to the Wounded Warrior Project. At over $15,000.00 each, these amazing chairs enable our wounded warriors to get back into nature, whether it be hunting, fishing or going to the beach with their families. This freedom helps bring a sense of "normality" back into their lives when they most need it.
I am happy and extremely proud to announce that thanks to the generosity of our owners and donations from our loyal vendors that we raised well over $40,000.00, meeting our goal to purchase 2 Action TracChairs for our wounded warriors. I want to once again personally thank all of our owners and vendors for their kind generosity in helping change the lives of at least two very special veterans and their families!
The freedom we all have that allows us to pursue our family lives and business interests to the point of being able to purchase one of our Yachts would not be possible without the brave men and women or our armed forces fight for that freedom every day.
These heroic men and women have paid the ultimate price for our freedom and now it is our turn to give back, and you all have! Thank you so much!
Sunday morning was the farewell breakfast, time to say goodbye to all our friends and family and head off to wherever the wind and currents (or airplanes) may take them. Upon personal reflection, I enjoy every Rendezvous more so than the previous, for seeing all our friends continues to deepen the bonds between us. Boats may come and go, but friendships and memories last forever and that is what we are really building here at Outer Reef Yachts.
Fair winds and blue skies to all...............
Cheers,
Jeff

Outer Reef Yachts, renowned and rapidly growing builder of semi-custom trawler yachts, proudly introduce the “new” Outer Reef 560 motoryacht series.
This is a pivotal yacht for the company particularly for the European market.
The traditional profile of this classic trawler-style motor yacht belies its contemporary, open-plan interior, designed by luminary Ken Freivokh. As Jeni Bone finds out, the result surpassed the owners “anything but teak and boring” brief to create a well-built yacht that not only goes the distance, but does so in style.
As soon as we arrived to the marina the first thing we hear is “Buongiorno”!!!! in a very warm and welcoming way..... Gotta love Italians!!!
We stopped in Imperia for a couple/three days on the way to Genova. We really enjoyed our short stay in beautiful Imperia. The people were extremely friendly and helpful. Every single marina that we docked at in Italy was great, the people were not only helpful, but very efficient!
The marina in Imperia was huge and unfortunately not finished. The story goess that the developers ran off with the investors money, millions of Euros. The best yachts that we have ever saw where here!

It has been a while since my last message. Things have been very busy with Outer Reef since my last message, which I am happy to report is all good. We have delivered a number of our new Ken Freivokh Design interiors (KFD), which have been well received by our customers. We recently exhibited a new KFD at the Gold Coast Boat Show in Queensland Australia. The response was overwhelming and there were many comments like; "we hit the nail on the head with this design" and "just totally awesome". There are 4 additional KFD interiors currently in build as well as other traditional interiors...

FIRST STOP IN FRANCE......BANDOL
We had to rush our departure from Barcelona to Nice as the weather was not cooperating and we had set a date to meet my cousin. We had a window of two days to get to Nice from Barcelona, if not we would have had to depart a week later. We navigated 24 hrs from Barcelona to Bandol rested one night and navigated 10hrs from Bandol to Nice.
Bandol is a cute little town with a pretty harbor where the Marina receives you with a bottle of Rosé Wine and all kind of information about the area. The day we arrived they had the local market right on the Marina...it was hilarious to see all mega yachts with fruits, vegetables and clothing stands right at their front steps. We for example, had a bras and underwear stand behind us. The funny part was that they had a “fitting area” that was covered on the street side but not on the ocean side; therefore, we could saw all the action. In the late afternoon the typical local artists brought their art to the marina and it was very pleasant to feel the French atmosphere. Woke up very early the next morning, had a gorgeous sunrise and left for Nice.

One of Outer Reef's latest models, the 720 Deluxbridge is completed and awaiting shipment to Fort Lauderdale.
The arrival to Port Adriano outside of Palma was wonderful. Nani Mass, the Marina Manager, was great by accommodating us and helping us with all our needs. Considering that this was our first marina in the Med, we had many needs and questions.
We went out for dinner with him and his beautiful wife a couple of times...great couple - we wish we had spent more time with them. Even though Port Adriano is about 20 minutes away from downtown Palma, it is the best marina we have been to so far. Great staff, beautiful marina, great restaurants and VERY PEACEFUL. The month that we spent in Port Adriano we had the boat cleaned after being on the ship for 3 weeks, carpet and some furniture cleaned as well, interviewed people, purchased TV receivers for Europe and had them installed, got the kids their EU Pet Passport, etc. We also had time to explore the city and we absolutely loved it. We rented a car while in Palma so it was easy to move around and explore outside the mayor city attractions. One of favorite places we visited was Soller. We took the old train to this small jewel where we were able to go back by boat later on. It was extremely charming with a beautiful harbor.

Yacht builders have been molding fiberglass boats in all shapes and sizes over the past 20 years. While futuristic Euro-yachts turn heads, expedition yachts suggest a greater purpose and retro-chic rides hint at class, we are fortunate that there are still boats designed for a higher calling — cruising. This is the market Outer Reef Yachts has concentrated on with laserlike focus. Its latest launch, the 700 LRMY (long-range motoryacht) is right on target...

Does your yacht have every amenity of home? The Outer Reef 700 does.
People who buy cruising yachts like the Outer Reef 700 LRMY have been sending builders one over-riding message for several years: they want their yacht to have the same luxury and amenities as their home ashore. The builders who heard that most clearly are now at the top of the industry.
After spending a month on the boat and having a great experience in the Bahamas, I flew to St. Thomas from Georgetown while Bo and 2 other licensed Captains spend three and a half days delivering the boat to St. Thomas. I arrived three days before the guys did, did my homework as requested per Captain Bo and went to every marina to find out information about docks and charges while touring the island along the way. The day after their arrival to St. Thomas, Bob and Don, the 2 delivery Captains, went back to Florida. For the first time, Bo and I were home alone in our new crib since we moved in. We stayed in St. Thomas for about two weeks and we never took the boat or the dinghy out. We just wanted to stay still for a while.

Very little is written about or credit given to the elaborate relationships between American yacht builders and their Asian partners and their shipyards. Beautiful yachts have been coming from Taiwan for many years, but were it not for the ultra-talented Taiwanese artisans and engineers, and the collaborative efforts with their U.S. partners, Taiwanese boatbuilding would not be what it is today. The industry has come a long way since the 1970s with the introduction of high-tech building techniques, superior quality materials and equipment, plus joint management efforts with their U.S. counterparts...
After a couple of years of planning, selling our home, selling our car, packing, shipping and storing everything we couldn’t live without... the dream came true, we bought our boat and managed to be down to one key. Our special thanks to Ed Weaver, a life long friend and yacht broker that helped us find the right boat.

Outer Reef Yachts of Fort Lauderdale announces today the introduction of its newest model, the Outer Reef 720 Deluxbridge™ Long Range Motoryacht (LRM). This new model for the company is the culmination of years of experience in building semi-custom Motoryachts, philosophically driven by continual refinement as well as client input and requests. The new 720 Deluxbridge™ LRM features an enclosed pilothouse and lounge with port and starboard wing stations in place of the builder’s traditional open flybridge. This allows for a huge “Country Kitchen” on the main deck in place of the standard lower steering station and pilothouse. The lower accommodations will feature 3 ensuite staterooms with a full beam master stateroom amidships with a full king berth. Aft accommodations will feature 2 staterooms with full head and shower, a mini-galley and laundry center for crew or guests. The aft accommodations can also be configured with many optional layouts such as a workshop in lieu of a second stateroom. Access to the aft accommodations is from the salon making this part of the interior living space and not an afterthought due to limited access.
Much emphasis is put on exterior living space with a new and improved expanded aft deck, a new European transom with flared stairs to the bathing platform for increased access for water sports and diving, and an enlarged boat deck that can accommodate a sports tender up to 20’ in length. The first 720 Deluxbridge™ LRM will debut at the 2012 Ft. Lauderdale International Boat Show.
2011 Roundup of the Adventures of Aroona
As 2011 comes to a close, I look back and feel we had had a great year on Aroona from Sydney to the Cape York. It has been one filled with adventures for myself, Andrew and hopefully all those whom we were lucky to have onboard along the way.
The year began with a glorious few weeks exploring the Queensland coast as we headed for our home port at Yorkey's Knob Marina. From reef fishing and exploring the Whitsundays to catching barra off Hinchinbrook Island , we were off to a fantastic start! While devastating floods threatened to damper the trip, Aroona made it safe and sound to the Far North but of course the excitement didn't end there. Cyclone Yasi set a direct course for the Cairns area within two weeks giving myself and Aroona its first real taste of Mother Nature. Aroona weathered the storm beautifully up the mangroves in Trinity Inlet giving us all a big sigh of relief to push ahead.
The first big trip off the rank was Princess Charlotte Bay . With 7 of us on board, we spent 8 days getting a first taste of the world class barramundi and reef fishing in the remote waters off Cape York Peninsula. The boys had a lot to brag about on the return with record catches of over 100 barramundi caught and released and an array of other fish and mud crabs for a feast. Aroona also embarked on her first day charters by the Easter holidays with guests including the Chinese ambassador and his entourage getting a taste of the coral reefs off Cairns with a marine biologist on board to give them a personalized tour. They made for quite a challenge...as not many of them could swim!
In May, Aroona was steaming back south for the Sanctuary Cove Boat Show which saw hundreds of visitors getting a chance to see her first hand. Andrew and I received lots of positive feedback getting us excited for what possibilities are to come as we expand our charter capabilities into the future.
On our way home from the Sanctuary Cove, a number of friends and family joined us along the way for some great fishing, diving and amazing weather to explore the east coast.
The next big adventure came in July with the dwarf minke whales arriving in the Far North. We met up with them on the ribbon reefs for a week of spectacular in-water encounters making passes within inches of Andrew and others on board. It has become a must-do on the annual calendar.
We've had a variety of fantastic charters from mother-shipping for the game boats, reef fishing and diving the ribbons, Osprey Reef and Lizard Island. I couldn't be any luckier with the great range of crew that helped make each trip a memorable one! The guests have all been an amazing mix of overseas and local clients who gave back just as much as I hope they took away from their time on board. We hope to see all of you back again in the future!
Since pictures are known to say a thousand words, I thought i'd let a montage of the year gone by give you a better idea of what we have achieved and what is to come in 2012. Enjoy and thanks to all for your tremendous support.

PassageMaker magazine reviews the new Outer Reef 70:
Outer Reef 70 - Bigger & Better
OK, I admit it. Size really does make a difference. Lest you think you've picked up a copy of Hustler by mistake, let me hasten to say that a fine example of this dictum is the Outer Reef 70 seen on these pages. It is essentially a stretched version of their 65-footer, but, oh my, what a difference!
Not only do those 60 inches make a quantum improvement on the interior and on deck, but they make the boat even more fuel efficient because of the longer waterline. It's a win-win that doesn't add appreciably to the price of the yacht, and as a result, Outer Reef hasn't sold a 65 since they introduced the 70...

Fort Lauderdale Boat Show Wrap-Up:
In anticipation of this year’s Ft. Lauderdale International Boat Show (FLIBS), expectations were mixed coming into the show for all. Having been to almost 20 major shows over the last year, nationally and internationally, and seeing all shows slightly better than the one before, my expectations were higher than most. The crowds were tempered in volume, but true to form as per the last 2 years shows, volume was lower, but quality of the clientele was much stronger. We saw steady crowds and many follow up customers. Even with the torrential rains of Saturday and Sunday, the serious shoppers were still out.
We sported a new display this year with a very open and inviting “café style” atmosphere. Everyone seemed to be pleased with the new display. Special thanks to Colleen and staff for pulling this all together. On display we had an Outer Reef 800, 700 and 650. The Outer Reef 700 was the debut for this model in the US and was a smashing success. This new model had something for everyone and the accolades were resounding. Friday evening was the christening ceremonies for “GOODTIMES”, where we officially welcomed Ward and Kim Young into the Outer Reef “Family”. A good time was had by all and the rain held off for the ceremonies and the cocktail reception.
The show had the noticeable feeling of pent up demand after years of stagnant malaise. With the purchase of Passagemaker Magazine and Trawlerfest events by the parent company of Show Management, Active Interest Media (AIM), the show was organized with all Trawlers and Long Range Cruisers, located in one general area within a “Trawlerport” venue at the show. This made for easy comparison of different brands all in the same area and put competitors side by side. I very much liked this format as we encourage our clients to see what our competition has or has not to offer as compared to Outer Reef.
We came away from this year’s show with 2 signed and funded contracts, one for an 860 Cockpit Motoryacht and a 700 Motoryacht. It is very rare in our business model to sign, let alone fund a contract at the show, which is a positive sign moving forward. As I write this we are formalizing 2 additional contracts, one for an 860 Motoryacht and one for our new model a 630 Motoryacht, all as a result of this year’s FLIBS.
On behalf of all the staff at Outer Reef Yachts I want to extend to all our clients, friends and their families, a very prosperous and healthy Holiday Season.
Cheers,
Jeff
Aroona's first exploratory charter to the remote picturesque region of Princess Charlotte Bay was a roaring success, with well over 100 barramundi caught and released by three anglers over four days.
See testimonial and photos written by one of our guests, keen angler Robert Muir from the Sunshine Coast, Queensland.
Aroona, 70' Outer Reef in Australia, will be running more of these luxury fishing trips to Princess Charlotte Bay north of Cairns, and to the vast mangrove system inside Hinchinbrook Island to the south of Cairns. Trips are currently being planned for the build up to the wet season in November/December and again straight after the wet in April/May 2012.

ANGLER'S REFLECTIONS:
What a fabulous trip to Princess Charlotte Bay! Along with experienced barramundi fishermen Richard Hovey and Dave Hunter, I spent six unforgettable days on Aroona fishing the southern rivers of this pristine and remote area.
Aroona is a brand new 70ft semi displacement Outer Reef motor yacht. She is a magnificently appointed roomy vessel that is extremely stable and sea kindly when under way. Aroona is genuinely luxurious. Each cabin is air conditioned, has its own ensuite and is very comfortably appointed. There are four lovely areas on Aroona for guests to enjoy. The spacious flybridge was a popular spot for lunch or having a drink of an evening watching the sun set over the mangroves. The saloon area is a great place to sit, relax and eat meals in air conditioned comfort, particularly if the sand flies were bad outside. The forward deck was a popular spot for a drink after a big day's fishing. Then there is the aft deck which is all in shade with a large dining table.
Aroona has an experienced, knowledgeable and very capable captain in Ross Miller but best of all he is a great bloke to be around. Andrew Prentice, Aroona's owner was our fishing guide for this trip; with many years of chasing barramundi around up north he didn't seem to have any trouble finding us fish. Ragini our fully qualified gourmet chef was a whizz in the galley. Her cooking is restaurant class and was exquisite! All crew were very friendly and we felt welcome immediately we came aboard.
Our trip started in Cooktown, although I was told that future trips will start from Lizard Island. We travelled overnight in what were fairly rough and windy conditions, which didn't seem to worry Aroona and I slept right through the night. The next morning we arrived at the mouth of the Bizant River where Ross eased Aroona through the shallow entrance into the deep water of the main river. Over the four days we explored and fished the Bizant, Normanby and Marrett rivers and marveled at the wildlife and the beauty of these isolated mangrove systems. We saw an amazing variety of spectacular northern birdlife: burdekin ducks, magpie geese, sea eagles, brahminy kites and various honeyeaters – among many others.
We experienced some amazing sports fishing with Andrew in his well set up 5M Quintrex Hornet which comfortably fished three anglers. We caught many solid barramundi and some very large threadfin salmon; other species included mangrove jack and fingermark. Our crab pots would invariably be overflowing with good-sized mud crabs!
We found a spot in the Bizant we dubbed “threadfin alley” which produced huge, leaping threadfin salmon one after the other. The barramundi fishing was tremendous. On our best day we captured or released between 40 to 50 barra. Some of these fish were over 900mm. At times the action was so fast that Andrew would have three barra patiently (or sometimes not so patiently) lined up to be released!
At the end of the day, after a hard day of fishing and exploring, we would freshen up and enjoy a well earned beer or wine on the upper deck watching the sunset. Then be served a beautiful meal by Ragini. We had some fabulous seafood meals! (The food on Aroona is to die for)
Aroona offers an interesting luxurious alternative to the typical hard core barramundi trip. Fish hard tossing lures all day – then absolute luxury, with excellent food and wine when you return! How good is that?
For the return trip to Cooktown we went through the beautiful Flinders Island group via the reef and moored overnight at Lizard Island. We spent an afternoon trolling along the reef with some spectacular pelagic action! Big hits and long, scorching runs from Spanish mackerel (biggest was 18kg) and tough as nails giant trevally. Apologies to Andrew for the broken rod!
At Lizard Island we had a mooring with a great view of the beautiful and famous island. That evening and then at night in Aroona’s underwater lights it was like being in the middle of fish bowl. The local tawny nurses (big but harmless) huge trevally and morwong came right up to the swim platform, constantly circling hoping for a free feed.
Next morning it was back to Cooktown and back to reality. Heartfelt thanks to Aroona and her wonderful crew for an absolutely memorable trip.
Looking forward to the next trip!

Ocean Magazine in Australia photographed Outer Reef Yachts owner and CEO, Jeff Druek together with Larry Polster, VP of Kadey Krogen Yachts. Below is a short article, courtesy of Matthew Henry, Ocean Magazine:
Kadey Krogen and Outer Reef have formed a formidable team.
When Larry Polster first laid eyes on on a Kadey Krogen motor yacht over 20 years ago, he knew he wanted to own one. He could not have known he would one day own the whole company. Today, Polster is one of three owners with a stake in the American pocket cruiser brand, which made its Australian debut at SCIBS.
"I first saw the brand in 1989 at the Annapolis boat show and thought, 'I want one of those one day'. Eventually I bought one second hand," Polster told Ocean.
Having had control of the company for five years now, Polster has struck up a deal with Outer Reef Yachts which will see the brand go global through Outer Reef's dealer network, including Australia.
"Kadey Krogen have the same values of quality and customer service that we have, so there was a natural alignment there," said Outer Reef CEO Jeff Druek.
Kadey Krogen concentrates on the sub-60-foot segment while Outer Reef chases business in the bigger sizes.
"We have people coming in the door looking for something under 60-foot range and we had nothing to offer them," said Druek. "Now we do."
Outer Reef Yachts of Ft. Lauderdale has appointed Tidewater Yacht Service of Baltimore, Maryland as one of its premier warranty and service centers for servicing its fleet of Outer Reef owners. As a prelude to this year’s Sydney International Boat Show of 2011, the Sydney area has experienced the wettest and windiest July in 60 years, according to the locals.
As I sit here on the plane with a 44 hour transit in front of me (I must have a word or two with my travel agent when I return) back to the states, it gives me time to reflect on the show.
Knowing well how good or bad weather plays into the success of any boat show, you can imagine my angst when Andrew Coffey, Outer Reef's general Manager of Australia and New Zealand gave me daily weather updates as the show approached.
From the delivery and offload of our newest model, the 63 open Motoryacht, which had been delayed due to horrendous weather en-route from Taiwan to Australia, to the delay of the move into the show due to 5-6 meter seas and wind to 60 knots around the Sydney area, all was not looking good for the start of one of the two major boat shows of the year in Australia.
It is winter in the Southern hemisphere and typical weather is windy, overcast, rainy, around 40-50 degrees during the day, and temperatures can go down as low as freezing or below at night. Perfect boat show weather!
As I crossed the Southern oceans at 36,000 feet headed to OZ, I was bounced around by the storms brewing above and below. As we closed in on Sydney 2 days prior to show time, and while on approach, the pilot came on the intercom and announced that we were ahead of schedule (must have been those bumpy tail winds) and the forecast for Sydney (for at least that day) was to be sunny and mild.
The talk of the town was all about the weather. The forecast for the next week was for sun and temperatures into the 70's. Needless to say I was greatly relieved. The winds had calmed down to a light breeze and all the boats moved into the show, albeit a bit delayed. It was like Poseidon, the God of the Seven Seas had laid down his Trident and given us a reprieve from his wrath of the past month. It made me think a bit that Poseidon may have been an Aussie rather than a Greek.
Show day opened with not a cloud in the sky, with just a whisk of wind and temperatures approaching 75 degrees. The crowds were strong and the quality of the crowds was even stronger. Outer Reef was displaying its newest model - the 63 open pilothouse Motoryacht. This new model is a modification of our 63 cockpit model whereas we removed the cockpit and re-allocated this space creating a larger boat deck, aft deck and salon. This boat in particular, built for an Australian client and his family also boasted a crew quarters aft with full head and shower as well as a very workable utility space. The interior layout on the main deck is an arrangement that is open between the pilothouse and the galley, as well as the rest of the main deck. It was a smashing success. The crowds overwhelmingly resounded it as a magnificent layout and best in her class!
We saw many people from shows of previous years that seem finally ready to commit to purchasing and Outer Reef. Although not the overriding issue, the strength of the Aussie dollar has garnered some influence in their decision making. During the show the Aussie dollar was at $1.10 to the US dollar! To give some perspective on this, when Outer Reef opened its office in Sydney 4 years ago, the Aussie dollar was $.67 to the US dollar. The current strength of the Aussie dollar, as well as the Euro and Canadian dollar is definitely influencing the purchasers of Outer Reef's which are sold in US dollars worldwide. There is no better time than now to purchase a new Outer Reef, especially if you are Australian, European or Canadian.
The remainder of the show was no different in terms of weather and strong crowds. We even had numerous sightings of the elusive "Monday be-back" (I'll be back), those taking a final look and walk through and taking advantage of the lighter Monday crowds to get down to the serious business of negotiations. This is something that has been non-existent over the last few years. I had almost begun to think that the "Monday be-back" had gone extinct, lost forever, a casualty of the even more elusive global warming! All now is good in the world Mr. Gore!
I came away from this year’s Sydney boat show with great optimism, more so than any boat show in the past 4-5 years. I feel very confident that we will close some new build contracts, with a half dozen contracts currently being negotiated. Obviously there are some specific economic parameters at play in OZ, but I think this is commensurate with the continued rise in optimism that is returning to the boating industry worldwide.
I want to extend a very special thanks to our team down under for a very well organized show (as always). Thank you Andrew, Justin, Daniella, Matt & Kenny. Also an extra special thanks to the Beattie Family - Mark, Claire, Amy and Emma, the new owners of "WONYIP III", our Sydney show boat. The Beattie's will be leaving Sydney with "WONYIP III" in the next week or so heading to Melbourne in the Southern oceans where she will be home based.
43 hours now and counting and I will be back in the States and will begin the work to finalize some of these contracts. After that? Of course yet another boat show, oh and yes, not to forget about that travel agent!
Cheers and Good Cruising!
Jeff
The first of the new Outer Reef 70 ”Hybrid” (convertible interior) arrived today in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. The offload was flawless with the assistance of our ace commissioning and delivery team - special thanks to Walt McCuiston, Dave Alshouse and Robert Mercado for a safe and successful offload.
She will be commissioned in the next 2-3 weeks. After commissioning she will be off cruising with her new owners and will not be back in Lauderdale until early October.
Outer Reef Yachts are to employ Ken Freivokh, the designer of Maltese Falcon, to design more contemporary interiors for their range of trawler yachts.
The idea is to increase the appeal for the European market with a series of interiors that are more modern whilst maintaining the traditional exterior of a trawler-style yacht...
The latest addition to our fleet, the 63’ Raised Pilothouse Motoryacht, has been loaded up and is on her way to her owners down under. The new 63‘ yacht features 5 additional feet on all three levels of the boat, in comparison to the 58/63 Cockpit version.
The additional deck space on the flybridge allows it to carry a much larger tender. The aft deck and the salon have also been extended and the extra space below allows for a huge lazerette or crews quarters. The increasingly popular open galley layout allows greater reverse visibility and is more conducive to on-board entertainment.
The new 63’ Motoryacht will debut at the

Outer Reef Yachts is happy to announce the completion of the first hybrid layout 70 Motoryacht scheduled to arrive in Fort Lauderdale mid-July. This yacht will include some special features, such as a disappearing mechanical wall that can separate the galley from the pilothouse as well as a separate stairway from the aft end of the salon to the crew quarters and engine room.
The new 70 will also boast a more contemporary look, stemming from the smooth faced cabinets, doors, and all teak hardwood flooring with holly trim. The 70 offers two additional cabins plus full head aft of the engine room including a small galley for crew. The flybridge on the 70 can accommodate a tender up to 20 feet.
The Outer Reef Rendezvous was a huge success! It was a beautiful atmosphere with wonderful people in a great location. We all enjoyed themed dinners and lunches with friends at the Pier House Resort, as well as many exciting planned activities to tourist destinations around Key West. We hope to keep this tradition going as we move forward through the years with new additions to our Outer Reef family.
Outer Reef Yachts of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, and Kadey-Krogen Yachts of Stuart, Florida, have entered into an agreement in which Outer Reef Yachts will represent Kadey-Krogen Yachts through all of the Outer Reef Yachts established international sales and service locations.

The first Outer Reef 70 to Australia hit the shores this past week after an uneventful journey from Taiwan and a flawless offload in Port Kembla, Australia. AROONA, the Outer Reef 70 was built to Queensland Commercial Survey by her owners Andrew and Linda Prentice and will be put into pleasure cruising, fishing and diving charters on the Great Barrier Reef.
All hands and her owners were up early on delivery day anxiously awaiting the go ahead from the Port Authority to see AROONA in the flesh since her voyage from Taiwan, akin to the likes of Christmas morning.
AROONA was blessed with an excellent placement on deck which shielded her from the ravages of the open ocean. M/V DIAMANTGRACHT, the carrier vessel dodged a couple of typhoons on her way to the Southern Hemisphere and bucked some very high winds and nasty seas on her final leg of the journey. Considering the weather she encountered along the way, AROONA was remarkably clean and ready to show off her stuff to her new owners.
After an uneventful 10 hour journey in 2-3 meter seas from Port Kembla, with pods of whales breaching and numerous dolphins riding the bow wave of AROONA, seemingly guiding her home, she arrived safe and sound at Outer Reefs docks and offices in Sydney.
AROONA will be in Outer Reef’s ”Try Before you Buy” charter program, in which potential customers can spend a week or 2 aboard AROONA, fishing and diving in some of the most pristine waters in the world. If the perspective client decides to purchase an Outer Reef, their charter fees will be reimbursed.
AROONA will go through the final commissioning process which will take about 2 weeks and once completed, she will head North to Cairns, where she will call this port her home base. I do not though foresee AROONA spending much time in port as she already has a very well booked charter schedule.
Outer Reef Yachts of Ft. Lauderdale teams up with Aroona Luxury Yachts Charters of Australia and joins Outer Reef's new "try before you buy" program. AROONA, the namesake of the charter company is a new Outer Reef 70 built for an Australian client to Queensland Commercial Survey standards.
AROONA will be based in Cairns, Queensland Australia and will be offering fishing, diving and cruising charter excursions to the Great Barrier Reef.
With Outer Reef’s new "try before you buy" program, a potential client may charter AROONA and if they decide to purchase a new Outer Reef, their charter fees are refunded.
This is a great opportunity to experience what cruising onboard an Outer Reef is like in some of the most pristine cruising grounds in the world.
"We are very excited to join forces with Aroona Luxury Yacht Charters and be able to showcase one of the most popular models in our fleet. This association with Aroona Charters is a great compliment to our operations in Sydney", says Andrew Coffey, Director of sales of Outer Reef Yachts in Australia.

Another new Outer Reef 65 was just offloaded this past week in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida to her proud new owners, who have never before seen the boat!
The original owners of hull #65-041 were so enamored with Outer Reefs new 70' model that they decided to put their 65, just nearing completion in Taiwan, on the market for sale and once sold, order the company's new 70' model. This was decided by the owner one week prior to loading her on the cargo ship bound for the States.
Two weeks later while underway in the middle of the Pacific Ocean on her way to Florida, she was purchased sight unseen by her present owners. These owners were not strangers to the Outer Reef as they had been on many Outer Reefs displayed at boat shows prior to this purchase.
The current owners realizing the rare opportunity to purchase a new Outer Reef 65 without having to wait to build one and get on with their cruising plans post their upcoming retirement, was very appealing to them. Another consideration was that this yacht was extremely well equipped and fit very closely what would have been their own personal specifications had they gone through the new build process themselves. Joel Davidson, sales associate out of the company's Ft. Lauderdale office was responsible for the original and subsequent second sale of Hull #41.
It is not uncommon for Outer Reefs to be sold very quickly when they do become available. Considering very few Outer Reefs are available for sale on the pre-owned market, this has created a supply and demand marketplace that has bolstered both the intrinsic and market values of Outer Reefs.
As a couple of examples, just recently a 2005 Outer Reef 73 was sold without even being officially offered for sale on the pre-owned market. Joel Davidson of the company's Ft. Lauderdale office had a client patiently waiting in the wings for his dream boat, an Outer Reef 73, to become available. Joel approached one of his clients that he sold a 73 footer to many years prior, hoping that he would be receptive to selling his boat. The deal was consummated in a very short period of time, with the purchaser realizing that he had capitalized on the rare opportunity to purchase the only Outer Reef 73 unofficially available.
Due to health issues with another client building a new Outer Reef 86, the client decided to offer the yacht for sale just as the boat was nearing final lamination of the hull and superstructure. This boat was sold within 3 weeks to a European Client by Trevor White, the company's EU sales manager at one of the European boat shows. The client also realized the value of the Outer Reef and being able to get into a sped up construction timetable. Due to the backlog in the current build schedule, the client appreciated that this purchase would allow him and his family to have a boat a year earlier than would have been possible on a new build contract.
Outer Reef's business model is one of direct marketing and sales through their own offices worldwide, with no dealer network inventorying product. Outer Reef Yachts is a build to order only company and does not build for inventory which helps to maintain value for current and prospective Outer Reef owners.

Outer Reef Yachts Delivers "HEARTBEAT", a new addition to the Outer Reef Family.
Outer Reef Yachts successfully delivered another beautiful yacht to Ft. Lauderdale this past week after a month long voyage from Taiwan, where she will receive final commissioning prior to be delivered to her new owners.
"HEARTBEAT" is a new Outer Reef 80 that was built for a very knowledgeable European Yachtsman and his wife, who will keep her in the states. "HEARTBEAT" is a very highly customized yacht built to the owner’s very strict standards and personal tastes. She has been magnificently decorated by the owners under the direction of Argonautica Yacht Interiors of Ft. Lauderdale.
“HEARTBEAT” is the first 80 built with Caterpillar C-12 Acert engines (705 BHP) as compared to larger standard engines. The owner knowing how he intends to cruise the yacht, mostly at displacements speeds, chose the smaller engine package for maximum fuel efficiency. On sea trials in Taiwan, “HEARTBEAT” performed better than expected with the Cat C-12’s. I expect that more Outer Reefs will be built opting for smaller engine packages in the future. See sea trial data on side bar.
"HEARTBEAT" will be available for viewings at the 50th annual Ft. Lauderdale International Boat Show in October.
After slightly less than a year, many emails (I hate to admit how many), meetings, phone calls, trips to your offices in both Florida and Maryland, and a trip to the yard in Kaohsiung, the boat is on its way. During the building process Jeannie and I had fun attending many boat shows and I did research on the internet for various boat parts and pieces.
For the past many months I have looked forward to the weekly emails and progress pictures from you. The first ones were of a barely recognizable boat and now it’s finished.
It has been a journey, from my perspective, of learning and amazement. I guess you think you know a thing or two after owning 7 boats; however, I learned and read a lot about the construction processes and techniques and am better for it.
Maybe I was more curious than necessary and would pester you with questions that might on occasion try your patience, if so you never showed it. Having a boat built is an interestingly intense experience, in part because you get so darned involved with the whole process. So many decisions needed to be made about big things with such long term implications as well as little things, that most people would not have a clue are even there. Along the way, I have enjoyed it all.
As a result, I have, on its way, a boat that is unique to our needs and will be a great cruising boat for Jeannie and me. These, I would assume are the last official pictures before delivery and the start of the commissioning process.
These may be my favorite pictures for a number of reasons. Partly because the boat is completed and is on its way to the US and they struck me as a dramatic finale.
You can find pictures on various web sites of boat construction, but it is fascinating to see this logistical process of shipping. It is also somewhat of a marvel that you can also track the cargo ship on the internet when it is near a shore based AIS receiver, so it seemed more real time to me.
So, as we begin this final phase and close one chapter, Jeannie and I are looking forward to the beginning of the next one.
Regards,
John and Jeannie Coyle

With the ever changing demographics of today's yachtsman, Outer Reef Yachts has introduced the first in a series of Yachtfish models. With this past years spike in fuel prices, many traditional battlewagon sport fishing machines with large horsepower engines and unsightly fuel burns, spent more time dockside than fishing. Although fuel prices have abated for now, most believe that this is a short lived reprieve and as the economy heats up again, fuel prices will again rise.
Many Yachtsmen that do not fish hard core any longer, but still wish to drag bait are looking in a different direction, the Yachtfish motor yacht. The Yachtfisher is the best of both worlds. Although getting to the fishing grounds may take a bit longer at 14-18 knots rather than 35 knots, once you get there, you can raise fish just like you did on that hardcore battlewagon. After a day of hauling in the dinner, you can relax aboard in opulent luxury with all the accoutrements that a fine motor yacht affords its owners.
If you are looking to fish in far off fishing grounds, the Yachtfish platform affords long range and comfort, and can stay offshore on extending fishing expeditions for months at a time. Another great benefit is avoiding all those fueling stations along the way with the traditional battlewagon.
Outer Reef Yachts has under construction an 86 Yachtfish for a California client and expects to deliver her in December 2009. The Outer Reef long range motor yacht is a natural for transition to the Yachtfish platform due to her inherent stability, offshore capabilities (open Ocean "A" rating), copious storage and deck space. With her huge boat deck, the owners favorite flats boat can be stored on board rather than towing it. As well with her proven semi-displacement hull design, desired speeds can be attained by their owners by choosing an engine package based on their cruising/fishing requirements.
"Being a custom builder we can customize any Outer Reef to owner's specifications. We see the Yachtfish market as one that will continue to expand over the coming years and we will be introducing many more models in our Yachtfish fleet", says Jeff Druek, CEO of Outer Reef Yachts.
The first Outer Reef 63 was delivered to Australia on April 1st to great fanfare by the press and locals. Although there are a number 65's currently plying the waters of Australia, this is the first 63 to reach the Continent.
The off load went very smoothly in Port Kembla, although many miles away from her final port of commissioning at the Outer Reef facility in Sydney, almost 100km away. The offload and delivery were overseen by Andrew Coffey, Outer Reef's Aussie agent and Dave Alshouse from our Ft. Lauderdale office. Commissioning of the boat was completed in an amazing 5 days, which is a testament to our quality control and pre-commissioning by our agent Walt McCuiston at our shipyard in Taiwan.
The new 63 will debut at the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show in Queensland May 21st - 24th of this year. This is the largest show on the continent and Australians from all over come to this much anticipated show. We expect the Outer Reef 63 to be as big a success as it is here in the states. We hope to see you there if you happen to be "Down Under" this summer.
Bob and Linda Coleman were looking for a boat they can retire on - something that would accommodate their large extended family, including 10 grandchildren. The Colemans, firsttime boaters from Kingsville, Md., bought an Outer Reef 63 at PassageMaker magazine's Trawler Fest in Stuart, Fla., in January. "The timing was perfect with the economy," says Bob Coleman, 56, the owner a successful landscaping company. From Voices of the Industry, a question and answer session with Jeff Druek, President and CEO of Outer Reef Yachts.
We purchased Ginger (formerly "Toto") in March of 2012, from the original owners. We had searched extensively for the "right" boat for us for 6 months. Friends of ours, Ray and Susan, own a 65' Outer Reef and they spoke very highly of the boat, and the brand. We were impressed with the way the company stood behind its product, and supported its owners. When we saw Ginger, we knew we had found the right fit for us.
Ginger spent her first year of our ownership on the East Coast, giving us a chance to get to know the boat, and to explore the Bahamas and Chesapeake Bay. We often called upon Outer Reef with questions, small issues, or for guidance, and they were always happy to respond. We also attended an Outer Reef Rendezvous, which gave us a chance to meet other Outer Reef owners and see many of the other vessels produced by Outer Reef. We have found the owner group to be a great asset in terms of information shared, as well as friendships.
At one point in that first year, when John and a small crew were repositioning Ginger from Florida to Chesapeake Bay, they found themselves on the edge of a named storm – Alberto. The sea conditions were bad enough to send one crew member to her bunk. But John said Ginger performed admirably. He was impressed.
In the spring of 2013 we shipped Ginger to Victoria, BC… it was time to bring her home. What a happy day it was when she was off-loaded in Victoria early in May! That began our annual migration pattern: north from the Pacific Northwest to Sitka, Alaska in the spring, and south from Sitka back to the Pacific Northwest in the fall. The positioning voyages have become highlights of our year. Ginger provides a comfortable ride, even when we are crossing large bodies of water open to the power of the Pacific Ocean.
We usually spend a few weeks aboard her in the spring and again in the fall, with shorter trips around Southeast Alaska during the summer months. The master stateroom easily accommodates a wardrobe sufficient for all kinds of weather and activities, from cold days in front of a glacier, to balmy days in the San Juan Islands, and from fishing gear, to dressier city attire. The ample storage space in the pantry, as well as under the salon settee's, and in the galley's refrigerator/freezer, plus a generous boat deck freezer, can keep us well-stocked for weeks. We have not yet used all of the many storage spaces Ginger provides.
We have made many upgrades and modifications to Ginger over the nearly 4 years we have owned her, and with each improvement we learn to love her more. The most significant improvement was the addition of full canvas surrounds on the aft deck, and the flybridge, affording us additional comfortable "indoor" living areas even in cooler weather. Phantom screens added to all doors and flybridge hatch allow us to enjoy the breezes without the bugs! We also added a 70 kilo Rochna anchor, which is more appropriate for Pacific Northwest and Alaskan waters. Troll valves enable slower speeds for salmon fishing. A second radar and plotter, a night vision camera, solar panels, and an ESI fuel polisher provide some redundancy as well as extra safety measures for peace of mind in the remote areas in which we cruise.
Several times during these past few years, we have called upon Outer Reef for this or that, and the response has always been fabulous, and even beyond expectations. Even though we are separated by thousands of miles, they have remained steadfastly supportive of us as Outer Reef owners. We are extremely pleased with the company, the way they stand behind their brand, and with the quality of the boat itself.
Sarah Ann and I can't thank you enough for your help in making this as painless as possible. It has been great doing business with you on both the purchase and sale of Barefoot Girl. We have always appreciated how you never failed to return calls or emails and answer our questions during the past 4 years. We too hope to cross paths again!
I was the Captain on MY GOODTIMES for 4 years from new to when we sold it May 2015.
Having run various boats this size over the years, I can honestly say that Outer Reef is by far superior to any other manufacturer.
The 70' we had , has the interior and deck space of a 85'.
Every detail had been thought out in great detail and had a purpose.
Dealing with Outer Reef on a day to day basis with warranty work was fluid and no hassle. Their back up service was a pleasure, and Allison Babb who answers each and every call, makes you feel like the most important person and gets the job done, even when you might think it impossible. We had a damaged anchor down in the Exumas one time and had no other option but to ask Outer Reef to help, in a couple of days it was delivered to the boat and we were on our way…All in a days work for Allison.
When selling the boat, Joel made the process absolutely painless and both parties were extremely happy.
As testament to their product and commitment to service, Outer Reef at their own cost supply each boat with a Maintenance Management Software package specifically tailored to your boat, with training. I and the buyer of GOODTIMES will vouch to the added value this brings to your boating and investment.
All in all, Outer Reef is an exceptional product at an incredible price.
Dear Joel, I am writing this letter in the hope, that someday a future yacht buyer will have a chance to read my letter to you in regards to your service, and the satisfaction I have had from the day I purchase my 65 Foot Outer Reef six months ago in Ft. Lauderdale, and the 5000 mile journey I traveled though the Panama Canal and up to San Diego with Once Around!
Joel, like most people looking for a new or used yacht, there can be a lot of things to consider by the time Linda and I finally agreed to purchase our Outer Reef. From the first time we walked on her decks to when we got off the Outer Reef, we new that this was the yacht we wanted.
When the time came to make an offer and close the deal, you Joel where the main reason we have our beautiful Outer Reef. Your knowledge about the yachting industry and the knowledge you know about your product was outstanding. You put us in a comfort level without high pressure to make an offer, negotiate with the seller and making the buyer and the seller happy to close the deal. Win-Win!
I mentioned that Linda, Penny our little dog and myself traveled for sixty days over 5000 miles on Once Around. We hired a great captain and crew for this trip. I get seasick some times and like my beauty sleep. Anyway, our two captains fell in love with our Outer Reef. From the design to the systems, they could not say enough good things about the quality. One of our captains has an engineer back ground and has captained many, many yachts. He, like us know the things that make Outer Reef one of the best yachts manufactured today.
Last, very little in regards to service was ever needed, but if I ever needed a part or had any questions regarding a system on board, we could always count on Outer Reef or you for help.
Joel, thank you again for helping us make our dream come true! We are off to Puerto Vallarta in January. Can’t wait…
Dear Joel,
I wanted to thank you for all of your help with the sale of the 65' Outer Reef "Tomahawk" to my client Steven Schude. You were a pleasure to deal with, helpful and very knowledgable about the "Tomahawk". Both Steven and I were impressed with you and your company Outer Reef. This was a brokerage deal but Steven was treated like a new yacht buyer and felt like part of your family.
Personally I can't say enough about your professionalism. After being in the new & brokerage sales over 37 years I can't say that I've ever been trated like I was part of the company doing a deal. You and Outer Reef has the buyer's best interest in mind when finalizing the deal and helping deliver him a great yeacht. He felt very comfortable with you and Outer Reef and he is sure to be a big supporter from this point forward.
Please share this with your manager and express my sincere thanks. This was definitely one of our best experiences in all of my brokerage sales.
Thank you for all your time and help and know that I will be please to deal with you and Outer Reef in future sales.
Sincerely,
Thomas E. Jenkins

You never know what the future will hold. So when we built our 65 foot Outer Reef we did not anticipate that we would still enjoy cruising on her 10 years later. This would not have been possible without the quality of the boat and support of the Outer Reef organization.
Thank you very much, Jeff Druek.
Well boys I played Victory at Sea. On my way to Campbell River I needed to pass Seymour Narrows. You can read the Coast Pilot. Essentially it cautioned that boats traversing the narrows should only go at slack tide. Being a New Yorker with no patience I went thru at high tide. I never moved the engine RPMs beyond 1200. Steered the mid channel with 10 knot currents and a 15 knot wind. ARGO hit a top end speed of 19.8 knots at 1200 RPMs
Hi John,
Thanks for the pictures! I truly appreciate not only your help, but that of the entire Outer Reef team. You have truly put together a top tier group that are the equal of the quality of your products. And, you can quote me on that, literally.
With kind regards,
Keith
We transited Cape Hatteras Thursday night during a very strong cold frontal passage with wind gusts as high as 49 knots. Seas built very quickly to 7 to 9 feet with sustained winds of 30 to 35 knots. All this happened as we were circumventing Diamond Shoal, which puts us at least 7 miles offshore and required course changes encompassing 270 degrees. We went from a following sea to a quartering sea to beam sea to another quartering sea to a head sea at the height of the storm.
Notwithstanding the flaw in my judgment for being out there (I took a calculated risk), the 63 showed no flaws in terms of its sea keeping regardless of the point of sail. The experience is almost surreal. You cannot hear the roar of the wind due to the boat's amazing quietness and since it was night, it was hard to see the wave heights. The boat just moved through the turbulence with sure footed stability.
Sir, you and your team build an amazing boat. I was confident that the 63 could handle heavy seas when I bought it but now I know from experience how stable she is. While I will continue to adhere to my conservative approach to heavy weather I will have the confidence that should the unexpected happen the boat can handle it.

John Dennison is incomparable as a Yacht Broker. His expertise is unmatched and his character without fault - he won't let you make a bad decision even if it would make him more money. There are few like him in the industry. If you let John represent you, your boat buying and/or selling experience will be smooth and enjoyable. He'll help you sell for top dollar and buy top quality at the best price.
Problems associated with Maverick have been few and minor. In each case Jeff and his great staff have always been there to assist me. Danny Stovall their purchasing and logistics manager has been there 24/7 for advice, service and procuring of wish list items. Whether in New England, Florida or the Caribbean Jeff and Danny are always a phone call away. With over 40 years of both sailboat and motor boat experience and a one-time boat builder myself I can honestly say Jeff Druek is one of the finest gentleman to ever build one of the best yachts I have ever owned or been aboard.

It seems like months since our boat arrived in Brisbane yet it’s only a few weeks. We’ve been so busy trying to absorb it all what with the importation process, pre-delivery works, the boat show, photos taken from the chopper for the magazine and the transfer of the boat back to our marina in Brisbane, a lot has happened. This weekend, Shelley and I finally got to spend time aboard our new boat, on our own, at our marina. We have started a deep clean from top to toe as we find that this is the best way to assess the workmanship and finish on any new purchase. We just wanted to say how impressed we both are. The further we delve into this boat the more evident it becomes that this is a very well constructed and finished boat in which there does not appear to be any shortcuts taken. We have not found anything that says “cheap and nasty”, to the contrary we are impressed with the quality and integrity of the fittings and componentry utilised, and that everything seems to have been done the right way rather than the easy way.
Congratulations to Outer Reef and Tania Yachts on a job well done!

I have spent my entire professional life trying to build products or software of the highest quality, and appreciate the "rare" company that also believes in quality and continued refinement.
Touring the facility, seeing the attention to detail and the craftsmanship, we could not he happier that our boat - the largest purchase we've ever made - is being built by Outer Reef at Tania.
We feel truly grateful to have found you all, and to be embarking on this project together with you.

On May 24, 2012 we were crossing back to Ft. Lauderdale from Gun Cay. For the first 47 miles the seas were as forecasted, 2'-4' plus rollers before the stream and 4'-6' in the stream with the wind out of the south southeast at 10-12 knots. I noticed a storm moving slowly north from Miami on my Sirius weather screen, but was not concerned about it because the colors were almost completely greens with only a hint of yellow, no oranges or reds. We had experienced several days of light rain and moderate wind in the green colored areas over the previous week.
When we got about 12 nm out the wind shifted more to the southeast and the waves began to increase. Sirius still did not show sever storm conditions. We were close to exiting the stream and I attributed the higher waves to that because the current often is faster close to the western side. The waves were coming astern so I altered course and adjusted cruise speed to minimize the rolling action anticipating I would soon be in calmer water out of the stream. I was wrong. Very quickly the waves increased to 8'. I turned into the wind and for the next hour and twenty minutes I was bow into 12' seas with waves every 8-10 seconds. Periodically I experienced back to back 12 footers with a deeper trough behind the second wave. Water came thru the anchor pockets and over the bow. It was difficult to hold my heading in the face of these waves.
Finally I got to the edge of the storm where the waves subsided to 6'-8' and were more widely spaced. As they settled to 6', I was able to turn back to a heading for the Ft. Lauderdale outer buoy. It took another hour and twenty minutes to get inside they jetties and we had 6 footers with an occasional 8 footer all the way in. I was very glad to have the engine power I needed to enable me to throttle up when necessary to minimize the effect of the wave action and to hold course.
Through this episode the only damage Risky Business experienced was to a wing door on the starboard side. At one point we took water over the starboard rail that slammed that door shut and the weight of the water bowed the door and split open the fiberglass jacket. I have been thru the engine room and the below decks areas, and the only other evidence I have found of the rigors of this storm was a few broken snap ties that were easily replaced. At this point all equipment and systems appear to be functioning normally.
Again, thank you for building a seaworthy boat. I never expected to test it in such difficult seas, but it is comforting to know that it can take that and more if need be.

To Aroona's extended friends and family,
As 2011 comes to a close, I look back and feel we had had a great year on Aroona from Sydney to the Cape York.

Happy holidays,

Hi All,
I was halfway through writing an e-mail to everyone when we got news a few days back of Cyclone 'Yasi' fast approaching North Queensland. How lucky the people of Cairns and our boat Aroona have been to miss the full force of this massive Cyclone, it is incredible that at this stage there is no report of any loss of life.
Ross and his Dad did a great job of tucking Aroona well up a little creek in the inlet amongst the mangroves (see first three photos of preparations to get her secure) Ross has just rung through that he is now on-board and everything is okay, no damage at all just covered in a fair bit of leaf litter from the mangroves.
Whewwwwwwwww!!!!!!!!!
Aroona will soon be back at her new home at Half Moon Bay Marina, Yorkeys Knob, just north of Cairns. The trip north ended up taking a little longer than anticipated with news of Dad falling very ill when we were at Mooloolaba just after New Years.
My last e-mail was written when Aroona was at the Gold Coast where we finish installing the last of the accessories.
We headed off up the inside passage past Moreton and Stradbroke Islands to Mooloolaba. It was great to have Sam, George, Georgie and Tim join Katie, Ross and myself for the trip.
New Year's Eve and the next couple of days with all the family and friends were delightful. We were moored right amongst the fishing fleet which turned out to be a great spot with no noisy neighbours. Great time had by all!
After New Year Aroona traveled on with Ross and Katie, Paul Wendy Mike and Tim Reilly up through the Sandy Straits in between Fraser Island and the mainland and then on to Bundaberg. Water conditions were a little dirty with a lot of the rivers in flood after the big rains. They still managed to boat Aroona's first Spanish Mackerel.
After Bundaberg where the Reilly's hopped off two friends of Ross and Katie's joined them for the trip to Hamilton Island. They visited a number of islands on the way and from the photos they showed me they visited some lovely spots.
I rejoined Aroona at Hamilton Island with a couple of mates from Shep, David and Richard and Ross's mate Paul also stayed on for the rest of the trip north. We had beautiful calm weather around the Whitsundays, caught a couple of fish, visited Whitehaven Beach, snorkelled and the boys taught me how to skurf ( see photos).
Early the next morning we headed out to the Outer reef where we fished and did some more snorkelling, spent the night doing a spot of shark fishing, which left a number of lacerations on my hands, need to be more careful next time.
From there we came back in towards the Palm Islands where both David and Richard caught two ripper fish. We then spent the night there before we entered the Hinchinbrook Channel. Next morning we put the tender down and fished up a couple of lovely creeks where we caught a good feed for lunch of flathead and one nice perch.
The next day we headed off to Cairns fortunately getting in before the heavy rain set in.
All in all it was a wonderful trip and I felt very satisfied to finally have Aroona safely at her home at Yorkey Knob.
(Little did I know what was heading our way at that time)
Hope everyone is well.
Cheers!

Outer Reef 70 - AROONA
Maverick made her way south form Long Island NY in mid October. We had great weather to Annapolis where we left off guests and picked up more. Seems our friends that are all sailors have developed a love affair with our Outer Reef. Due to weather outside we traveled the Inter Coastal to Charleston then outside to St. Augustine (a very rough inlet) to pick up more friends for the remaining short trip to Maverick's winter home in Stuart. Maverick performed beautifully and was well admired in every marina we stopped in. Though sailors for over forty years and still owner's of the Swan 57 Boonatsa in the Caribbean, Linda and I are quickly becoming addicted to Outer Reef's luxury and seaworthiness as are some of our fellow sailing friends who incidentally have all asked to make the return trip to New York in the spring.

Arrived yesterday in Miami after a memorable trip with Sonny Novak, my brother and one of my college room mates.Awesome trip - rough weather down the Chesapeake through North Carolina - jumped outside at South Port and took advantage of a weather window. Two all night, 36 hour runs - South Port N.C. to Fernandina Beach, Fla. in over night and then straight to Miami."The Gator" ran like a top - no real issues in over 1200 miles!Sonny did a great job helping me learn the boat - and is a gourmet cook to boot! The trip convinced me that my decision on the OR 65' was rock solid.

Nan Shan, Karl, Chaucer, Jeannie and I would like to thank you all for your time, generosity and hospitality during our recent visit. We enjoyed the time you spent with us, allowing us to more greatly appreciate the fine work that you do. It is an amazing process, we were able to see firsthand how such fine craftsmanship and technical expertise go into building our boat. The behind the scene look at how so many components are handmade, the high standards for quality and the attention to detail are one of the many things that stood out to us. We really liked the wood working shop, following the process of wood selection, crafting and finishing that result in a final product of such fine quality. Overall we walked away with a much greater appreciation for the expert craftsmanship that goes into each boat. We enjoyed our time with the younger staff that stayed with us for most of our stay, as we walked through our boat asking questions, probing issues and making minor changes. They were absolutely delightful to work with and added to the overall sense of professionalism that we saw. Our meeting with Karl was most helpful and again, added to a real sense of completeness. We are excited about how well the boat is coming along and what a fine vessel she will be. We feel a greater sense of being connected to her as well as having a greater appreciation for all that is needed to build her. Seeing all of the people that work on various components and the apparent pride that they take in their work, made this trip well worth the time and effort. We would not have missed it. Jeff and Chaucer we want you to know how much we appreciate the thoughtfulness of the layout and its overall livability. Having owned many boats in the past and lived aboard one, we have come to appreciate how important the living and storage space is. This was one of the critical factors in our initial attraction to Outer Reef. Being able to tweak the design makes the boat very comfortable for long term cruising, comfort and ease of handling for a couple as well of a sense of security for its sea keeping design. Finally the lunches were absolutely great. Such a sense of hospitality and good cheer. I think it was one of the highlights of our trip that we will remember for some time and we thank you for being so warm and generous. Many thanks for the friendliness, openness and broad access to the yard and people. It has reinforced our decision and was a trip we will long remember. Regards, John & Jeannie Coyle the future M/V SeaBright 65-38
ILLUSION IV is now in Nova Scotia where we have been cruising her after a trip up the east coast stopping in Brunswick GA:Newport RI, Nantucket MA and various ports and anchorages in Maine. I just wanted to report back to you that I have never had a new boat that has had absolutely a minimum of “start up issue” and has handled as well as ILLUSION. All of you at Outer Reef should be proud of your product and I just wanted to thank you for producing such a truly excellent yacht. She is a joy to handle both underway, docking and maneuvering in some very tight quarters. In addition she is beautiful to look at and a very seaworthy vessel. Coming from a die hard sailor, these compliments are sincere and based on many years of cruising in vessels I liked. In all the sea conditions we have experience to date, she has tracked well and been extremely stable. Due to the current high price of fuel, I was pleased with the fuel burn at 1100 RPMs and averaged approximately 5.5 GPH on each engine while cruising at an average speed of 9 knots (and this has been with less the a clean bottom since she sat in Georgia for about a month and a half before starting north). Everyone who has been aboard speaks nothing but rave reviews and she attracts many admirers both at dock and at anchor. I just wanted to give you a short report on how things were going and to thank you - Jeff S
Cory our Captain is great. We had a flawless trip to the Bahamas and he and his crew of two had an uneventful trip north having arrived this past Monday. It took them four days and eight hours to go 1,100 miles (Ft. Lauderdale to Stamford). They burned about 1,300 gallons of fuel. I’ve had the boat out twice earlier this week and am getting used to maneuvering it. The thrusters are key. Suzanne and I are very pleased with our choice of boat. You and your team should be very proud of your accomplishments in putting together such an awesome line. It’s a great sea boat and very quiet. Everyone who has seen the boat is blown away by how handsome it is, by the thoughtfulness of the layout, the quality of the materials and the overall spaciousness in every area. I also wanted to mention that your team is A number 1. They could not have been more helpful!
Motor Yacht "AULICA" Outer Reef 65. PREPARATION PRIOR TO DEPARTURE - SOUTHAMPTON TO GIBRALTAR. The new yacht arrived in Southampton by container vessel from Kaohsiung, Taiwan on Saturday 5th August 2006, offloading to the dockside. On Monday after clearing security, myself, two sons Stephen and Heath, together with the able and knowledgeable assistance of Dave Alshouse from Outer Reef Yachts, we were able to commence commissioning and preparing the yacht for the trip to Gibraltar - a distance of just under 1200 nautical miles. Wednesday 9th. At 11am high water the yacht was lifted from the building cradle and launched into Southampton Waters. After a thorough inspection of all seavalves and watertight fittings we started engines and made our way to the fuelling jetty on the Inchin River, filling up to a capacity of just over 7,500 liters (2,000USG), then on to Shamrock Quay Marina nearby for final commissioning, sea trials with compass swings, provisioning, lifting and securing yacht tender, liferaft, engine spares, oils and a full 1600 litres of fresh water. Thursday afternoon saw the arrival of my three fellow voyagers, Neville, Jim and Vince, as Saturday morning was the target departure day. Neville and Jim had, on previous occasions crewed with me from the UK to Gibraltar on both sail and motor, and on one trip having suffered storm 11 on a new yacht with sails shredded, surprised me that they keep volunteering! Weather forecasts were showing a change of pattern from the settled conditions of previous weeks with the Atlantic High over the Azores commencing to move and a series of lows crossing West to East towards Europe. LOG EXTRACT OF M/Y AULICA - SOUTHAMPTON TOWARDS GIBRALTAR. Saturday 12th. August . 0610hrs. Slipped moorings and headed down the Inchin River and into Southampton Water towards the Solent, eventually clearing the Solent with the Needles lighthouse abeam to Starboard at 0905 setting a course of 226 T towards Ile D Oussant on the North West coast of France. Engines synchronised at 1650 revs. calculating to give 10.5 Knots fully loaded. Forecast was for winds North Westerly Force 3/5 and increasing, which meant beam seas on the port side - a good test for the Stabilizers. By mid-afternoon we were crossing the Casquettes regulated shipping traffic lanes, keeping well clear of the large tankers and container vessels. 2000 hours the wind had increased to force 6/7 bringing with it short, steep 3 to 4 meter breaking seas, typical of 100 meter deep waters. Stabilizer settings were increased to further dampen down the effects of the beam seas. Sunday 13th. August 0000 hrs with a position 18 miles north of the French coast, assisted by tide giving us up to 13 knots and expecting to round Oussant at 0400 winds had veered to NNW giving a confused port quarter sea, our concerns were of rounding Oussant in present conditions and having to alter to a more southerly course which would bring the seas more on the stern. Approaching Oussant at 0400 hrs we had lost the south setting current. 0430 hrs Altered course to due South and shortly after experiencing what must have been a 5 knot, north setting current, our speed immediately dropped to under 5 knots, The high following seas immediately swamped the stern and turned the yacht towards a broaching position and well over on starboard beam, we immediately gave full engine revs (2400) which brought us out of the broach with our speed slowly picking up to 12 knots. The increased revs had stabilized the situation although we now had to throttle back to avoid the bows burying into the seas ahead. With varying engine adjustments we were now able to maintain a reasonable southerly course, sometimes surfing at 16 to 17 knots - not intentional, but with engine control and reading the instruments we were reasonably able to control the situation. By 0700 the conditions had moderated with the seas still on the stern and wind N’ly force 5/4 we had entered the Bay of Biscay. Our Navtex weather receiver was giving South Biscay as gale force 8 with 4 meter rough seas within the next 12 hours. As we were now in a position approximately 30 hours away from the general area we decided to steer a course more easterly than previously intended and set course 208 T towards the fishing port of La Coruna 320 miles distance from our 0700hrs position, which was still within the gale area. We had used La Coruna previously in October1994 as a port of refuge, knowing it to be a sheltered port with good entrance. Monday 14th August 0000hrs. Position 45 30N 06 52W made 180 miles since entering the Bay giving a steady 10.5 knots in much easier conditions with a longer swell, a depth of 5,000 meters of water makes a difference. Wind northerly force 4. Weather reports are giving the gale as moderating to force 7 and moving in a southerly direction and south of our position. 0500 hrs with a better weather report we decided to alter course to round Cape Finnisterre off the North West coast of Spain,130 miles ahead. 1200hrs Navtex reported 13 meter yacht adrift in our area so kept a sharp lookout. 1730hrs. Cape Villano abeam to Starboard, distance 3 miles 1910hrs. Cape Finnisterre abeam, distance 6 miles. Now on course 183T towards Cape Vicente, 350 miles ahead. Tuesday 15th. August 0000 hrs. Position 42 03N 09 30W 26 miles WxN of La Guardia and the Rio Mino on the Spain Portugal border. Wind N’Wly force 6/7 seas moderate to rough and pounding our port quarter, although uncomfortable, of no real concern as by now we were by now used to the performance of the yacht. Speed 11 knots at 1600 revs assisted by a slight current which would normally be expected in this area. 1200hrs. With Portugal 25 miles on port side, and Cape Carvoeiro 30 miles ahead. Wind from the NNW has eased to force 4 with seas now moderating. Fuel change over from wing tanks to lower centre tank. 2000hrs. From our position west of Lisbon, distance to go to Gibraltar 290 miles. Calculations gave an ETA around 2300 hours Wednesday evening which would be too late for arrival at Queensway Marina. Approximate fuel calculations were taken which gave 2500 litres (670USG) still on board. Distance travelled from Needles Lighthouse to present position is 880 NM in 83 hours gives average speed 10.6 knots. Fuel consumed (approx) 4900 litres or 59 lph (15.61usgph). Maintaining same speed to Gibraltar would use approx. a further 1650 litres leaving a reserve of 13.5%. Of course you can build an Outer Reef without going to Taiwan to see your boat in process, but why would anyone want to do that? That being said, I’d like to expand a little more on the Kaohsiung experience of the owners of Copeing, Hull #1 of the 65’ Outer Reef. Planning your trip can be accomplished one of 2 ways. Outer Reef uses a great travel agent who can book your flight, which we used for our second venture. The first trip we booked ourselves on American Airline and Japan Air, in order to use miles. Both trips were great, but we agree that it is better to arrive in Kaohsiung in the morning. It makes acclimating to the time change (Eastern time plus 13 hours) easier. Because of the extended flying time, Business Class is the only way to go. The time goes by quickly and in relative comfort, and the food is great and endless. Being a boatyard girl, (I’ve been taken through a great many) I found Tania to be one of the cleanest and most modern I’ve seen. They employ over 80 people who are all friendly and polite, from the 2 ladies who are always cleaning to the various foremen and craftsmen. The first sight of your boat in production tells you the right decision was to make the trip. This is reinforced throughout the visit. It’s a humbling experience to watch a cabinetmaker spend 30 minutes measuring, planning and fitting just to make sure that one shelf is perfect – especially when you see the process repeated on every shelf, door and cabinet. The pride in workmanship is repeated endlessly throughout the boat. Not being an engine room girl, I can only say that this part of the boat looked good, too. Nan Shan, Karl, and Chaucer were readily available and were very busy making certain that everything went well. They also answered all our questions and requests and were exemplary hosts during our visit. Lunch was quite an experience. We were taken to a local seafood restaurant with a round table and big lazy Susan in the middle. Nan Shan selected our food from a large iced-down display in front of the restaurant. Keep in mind this was fresh fish, swimming fish, fruits and vegetables, but had none of the fishy odor of our domestic seafood markets. Everything was that fresh. A word to the wise…don’t point anything out or ask questions, unless you care to sample what you’re pointing at. Nan Shan, Karl and Chaucer are very observant, and will make sure you get to try whatever arouses your curiosity. After a long day at the boatyard, be prepared for a great hotel! The Splendor caters to its clients as Tania caters to its customers. The rooms are beautiful, the beds are firm, the spa and workout room are clean and modern. Be aware that upon entering your room, you need to insert your card into the wall slot. This will turn on the air conditioning and lights. The lights are also controlled by buttons on the telephones, however, and you can turn them off without removing the card. The wall outlets are 60 hertz/110 volts, so no adapters are needed. The hotel provides hair dryers and laundry services, no iron in the room. Cell phones do not work, but computers do. There is internet through the TV in the room, but we weren’t patient enough to make it work. There are TV shows in English as well as Taiwanese, so you can find out what is happening in the world from an international perspective. Nan Shan was a very gracious host, and arranged to take us out to dinner for steak one night. Jasmine’s restaurant caters to the English-speaking clientele, and was a lot of fun. Another tip, take a hotel business card with you when you travel by taxi. While the Splendor is a landmark in Kaohsiung, Splendor Hotel in English doesn’t mean much to the cab drivers. We also had the opportunity to shop in downtown Kaohsiung. While we were the only Westerners in sight, and the only English-speaking people we encountered, we had little difficulty conducting business and became somewhat adept at charades. Kaohsiung is not a tourist destination, and this made our visit all the more enjoyable. The people on the streets couldn’t have been more gracious! We even found the local Pizza Hut for our only American meal (and we opted for pepperoni rather than squid on our pizza). Our only regret was that we couldn’t stay longer or take time to visit any other parts of Taiwan, Hong Kong, Tokyo or Hawaii. We highly recommend a visit to Taiwan, Kaohsiung, and the Tania boat yard!
I wanted to send my comments regarding the performance and sea kindliness of the Outer Reef 73 and the 65. As you know I have been the captain of SEA STAR for the past year and a half with trips to the Bahamas and to Maine. In all respects the boat has performed admirably. I also captained the 65 for a short period of time, and she too performs to the same degree as the 73. Some specific points I want to remark on are as follows: • Hull shape and strength. The hull shape with the keel below the propellers gives protection to the running gear. Also the boat performs well in following seas. Down wind steering in heavy seas is the most difficult for the boat to maintain a course. The Outer Reef tracked very well. In the Bahamas during a trip with 25 to 30 knots of wind and the seas off the port quarter, the boat steered a straight course under human control. It was not comfortable and we were glad to get into port, but the boat stood up to the test. • Hull quietness while at anchor or at a dock. The spray rails and the step in the hull is high enough that you do not get the slapping of the waves against the hull. In other trawler types, I have found the boat to be quite noisy when at anchor. The lapping of the waves against the hull can be rather irritating. Not so with the Outer Reef. • Engine room and systems location. I have found the engine room roomy enough to work comfortably in. The pumps and systems are located in areas that are easy to access. I particularly like the sea chests for intake of water to the various systems; they eliminate excessive thru-hull intakes. • Cabinet making The craftsmen at the yard are excellent wood workers. Their joinery work is superb. • Yacht improvements. Each new boat, and I have seen three so far, have improvements over the prior boats. These are not static projects. I am constantly surprised at the number of improvements each new yacht brings. I must congratulate Jeff Druek and his staff on the number of upgrades on each yacht. • Economies of cruising. The boats cruise comfortably in the 9 to 12 knot range with fuel consumption at about 11 to 23 gallons per hour depending on the rpms. With fuel tankage at 2000 to 3000gallons, the burn rate gives you a cruising range of over 1000 miles. I am available to discuss with any prospective buyer, my experiences with the Outer Reefs; more than can be discussed in this letter. Feel free to call at any time. Sincerely, Bob Belschner 500 Ton Coast Guard Merchant Marine Captain
An additional three orders of Trident 550s have been placed and the laying up of the first new hull will start immediately.
The yard has completed the infusion of Trident Hull 2 which should be released from the mold later in the week.
The yard has built scale models of major engine room components as a mockup which was reviewed with Outer Reef President Jeff Druek
The bulkheads have been installed and port lights cut out for Trident Hull 1. Lay up is underway for Hull 2 and it is expected that the second hull will be vacuum infused at the end of the week.
Work has now begun to install the primary bulkheads in the first Trident 550 Hull following which the hull will be extracted from the mold.
The peel layer is now fitted and the resin and vacuum lines placed in the mesh in accordance with the plan developed from the application of the Polyworx simulation
Experts from Polyworx of the Netherlands are now on site to apply their cutting edge RTM-Worx flow software to create a simulation of the resin transfer during the controlled vacuum infusion processes. By using vacuum resin infusion techniques, the Trident hulls will generally exhibit higher strength-to-weight ratios than would be achievable with hand lay-ups or traditional vacuum bagging. Vacuum infusion is a specialized technique that allows a dry lay-up with unlimited set-up time then vacuum pressure is used to drive resin into the laminate. The process requires technical knowhow but the result is clean, efficient, and capable of producing stronger and lighter parts all of which flow through to better speed and more efficient performance for the Trident T550! You can watch a video of the simulation by clicking the link above. In the meantime work continues to lay up the inner skin and foam core.
Team Installing Outer Skin Laminate and Lay-up showing Lifting strakes glassed in and topside Foam installation.
The Skin Tie layer is applied to the Hull Mold in readiness to lay up and infuse the first Trident 550 Hull.
Work has now begun to wax and gel coat the molds in preparation to infuse and extraction of the first Trident 550 hull over the coming days.
Experts from Superyacht Solutions Limited have completed work on the final plug element for the Trident 550 Series.
On 2 and 3 December the mold sections for the Outer Reef Trident 550 were successfully cracked off the hull plug and are now undergoing preparation to lay up the first hull expected mid December.
Following completion of the hull plug work is well underway in building the mold which we expect before the end of November. Trident 550: Construction of the Plug August to November 2014.
In readiness to pull the first Trident hull from the mould in November, a new floor has been laid in the 6,000m2 Production Hall.
First and foremost, Outer Reef Yachts gauges success by taking the temperature of our client’s happiness; and with this, the 2016 Yachts Miami Beach has been slated as being a very successful show for Outer Reef, for many reasons. One exciting reason: Outer Reef launched the new 550 Trident at the show, leaving a lasting impression for those who traveled the globe to see her.
