August 17, 2009

August 13th thru the 16th marked Outer Reef's first annual owners rendezvous held in Block Island, Rhode Island. Block Island is dubbed as the "Caribbean of the North" due to the crystal clear waters, the diversity of marine life and a perfect venue for northerly cruising in the summer months.

Many owners and guests, with and without their boats showed up for the festivities, some as far away as Australia and Taiwan. The weather started out foul for move in day, but by afternoons end the skies cleared up and the sun came out, just in time for the welcoming cocktail reception that was held aboard "SHOWTIME", the classic 1969 Trumpy MotorYacht which was sponsored by Yachting Magazine.

The rendezvous was packed with activities, seminars and tours of the island for 3 additional days under clear blue skies with temperatures averaging in the 80's. Breakfast, lunch and dinner were served under the big top tent set up for our activities and I can say that it was some of the best fare I have ever had and would rival any 5 star restaurants. I think that all in attendance would agree.

Awards night on Saturday was the highlight of the rendezvous. Many prizes and awards were given away from VHF radios, personal safety beacons, luxury accommodations for yacht and guests in the Bahamas', to a new Outer Reef custom made steering wheel. Tania shipyard who was represented by Nan Shan and his wife Su Lin presented exquisite handmade gift boxes, which were a testament to the wood working prowess of Tania's craftsmen. After dinner all danced the night away to the band playing 50's and 60's era music. The theme of the evening was a pirate night and let me tell you, we had some pretty awesome looking pirates!

Sunday morning met us with beautiful blue skies and a light breeze. All our owners got off the dock in great fashion and elegance and proceeded to leave the Great Salt Pond in different directions and most with final destinations unknown. Ahhh, the cruising life!

For me personally, the high point of the rendezvous was the satisfaction of seeing old friends re-acquaint and new friendships being made. This is what cruising is all about, family, friends and fun along the way. I look at Outer Reef Yachts as more than a boat building company, I consider it a vehicle to great friendships and relationships, ones that I will cherish forever.

Thanks to all our staff and vendors for making our first annual rendezvous such an enormous success and thanks to all our owners and guests for being part of it all.
Thank You,

Jeff Druek
